I understand the image sizing for DSLR and most CCD images, and the need to control the size the images grows to. Would it be possible to have a compromise square format too, like 995x995, for us with square format Cameras??? It would be the same pixel count in the image... AlanP

Alan the format size has to do with the display of the image on the forum. 995 x 995 would be fine. We just don't want to reduce or enlarge images if we can help it. Hence the maximum of 900 x 1100 pixels. Submitted images larger than these dimensions will be resized to fit these requirements. We were getting some HUGE stuff sent before.

To add to the discussion about image size. We do receive a few images considerably smaller than 900X1000 pixels. These images are accepted but will have a disadvantage competing with higher resolution images.

Another matter. Often images are submitted with member names and other identifying information on them. Since the winners are chosen in a blind competition by the membership, all identifying information is removed. It is best not to have any such information on the image.

Will lunar and planetary images be displayed at their native (submitted) resolutions, sized appropriately? If not, there is a legitimate issue with any policy that resizes planetary imaging submissions due to a qualitative impact on those images. Most practitioners use cameras with 640x480 pixel chips and that is the limit of their resolution. When you start enlarging those images more than, say, 10% to 20% they can start breaking up pretty badly. I believe lunar and planetary imagers would be at a severe disadvantage if their work MUST be displayed at something like 900x1100 pixels, forcing the images to be submitted in a sea of black background and that does not really promote an aesthetically pleasing composition. Can I assume that there is no intention to enlarge planetary images to fit some inappropriate size threshold? I ask this only because I have submitted images that, when displayed on AF, were larger than intended and started to show signs of degradation. Thanks!

    Brian,

As Joe (sxinias) stated above we attempt to leave the images at the size sent to us. If you require your image to be displayed in a lower format than 900 x what ever, state so in your submission email and we will accommodate it, as I mentioned above the problem is primarily with images that are submitted in much larger format. Those must be reduced to accommodate the limits of the forum software.
