    Arrow Horse head.

If I want to image the horse head thingy.....where do I aim my scope.
Where is it from the trap in Orion?
I am reading I need a big scope to do this.
I plan on imaging it with my 5" refractor shortly....is it possible?

    Declan,

Don't think you will have much success (I can't see it visually with my 10" Newt in a dark sky site!)

However you can do a search for "horsehead nebula" in Stellarium and it will show you the exact spot.

IC434 is the "official" nomenclature according to Stellarium.

Next to Alnitak above sigma orionis - you'll probably need 20 subs at 1600 and 20 seconds before you see it after processing. try to keep sigma out of the filed if you can - it tends to make a mess of the exposure

Sigma makes a mess of the exposures for sure.
I can get it with ISO 800 at about 2 minute exposures but never had enough clear Sky's to make it worth posting

It's called IC434, or Barnard 33. Located right next to Altinak. Your scope does NOT have to be large to "image" it, but it has to be large to physically "see it" with your eyes. It's damn near impossible to view in small scopes like 6", 8" or even 10" scopes.

But to photograph it, all you need is a scope with a camera hookup, and long exposures.
