If you want to try serious professional stuff - google ACDSee PRO 4 Beta Download
It will be yours to use for free for about 6 months. And, unlike GIMP, it has full-scale functionality with RAW.
Just to give you imagine of the program capability I played in it with your image. Would be much better with RAW.

Is this a single image or did you get multiple subs and stack them? How long of an exposure and at what ISO? That target looks like a pretty difficult target...if this is just a single exposure its impressive!

Also, try BackyardEOS or APT both of which have trials, it makes the actual image acquisition so easy even I could do it! I absolutely love BackyardEOS.

What, No Candles? Great image though. Like above, try GIMP and ACDSEE Pro Beta...I'm still learning both of those and I think my learning curve has learning curves...

there is a GIMP plugin to handle RAW files and it is based on the popular DCRaw... UFRAW. It can also be used as a standalone RAW editor.
