The pic is made up of a short stack of 13 subs x 20 se x iso800.
The weather is quite warm, so there's quite a bit of ampglow at iso1600.
Thanks for the ACDSee PRO 4 Beta and Gimp recommends - I've just downlaoded GIMP we'll have a look at that one first - then try the others!
    So much learning! sheesh!
    Question Mplanet...
Does it handle tif images (ACDSee PRO 4 Beta)? Since the stacker produces tifs after stacking rather than RAW

    Pretty nice job actually .
You did good with the canon software even with its limits.
I use it when I'm imaging to see if I got the white balance close.
cant wait to see the image after you get some decent software.

    Jen, here's a try:

I isolated the nebula and did a simple hue adjustment on the base image, then stacked it on itself to bring out a bit more detail. I had another go but in that one the amp noise on the left edge really stood out.

GIMP is a decent program, it's what I used for a few years before finally getting ahold of a copy of cs2 that a friend no longer needed. There is plenty of tutorial material on the web if you get bogged down learning it.

Yes, I use one. The problem is - like Photoshop GIMP needs the RAW file to be "translated" to it with some plug-in. But, unlike Photoshop, current version of GIMP is a rather funny mix of 16 bit and 8 bit processing at it's core. It's seriously good for a free soft, but lacks full-scale 16 bit functionality.
Dedicated photo editors are often criticized for lack of flexibility because most of them have have no layer management - not even layer concept. But they are exceptionally strong at what they are designed to do - develop digital negatives - those are RAW files of all sorts.
So, I use both - photo editors to get the best from RAW and develop it in .JPG - and GIMP for .JPG refinement. Ideally, for me it would be Adobe Lightroom or ACDSee PRO with the result written as .DNG - and Adobe Photoshop afterwards. But that's nothing as affordable as GIMP, true.

    Jenny,
Yes, it opens and edits TIFFs - I tried this. However, there might be differences in TIFFs written by different software. I did not use stacker a lot to give you a competent advice on it.
