Default Orion wide-field (Orion, Running Man, Horsehead, Flame)

Wanted to shoot the full span of Orion to Flame Nebulae for a while, and finally got the chance last weekend. Shot a whole bunch of unguided 15-sec, 30-sec, 1-min, and 2-min subs. Since the targets were at the corners, this was good test of my polar alignment (since it was unguided) and field flatness of the lens. Pretty happy that it came out sharp across all the corners.

    Dude,

Your images, including this one, are ridiculous. To produce these pics with what is super accessible equipment for nearly everyone's budget is what my goal in AP is.

Outstanding. This exact framing is my next target and im out the door to get a 200-300mm lens for my 40d

    cheers,
    AJ

p.s do you use the LCD @ 10x to focus?

    Hi Fuzz,
It is fantastic. Unlike beautiful, but business-like Hubble pictures, your images are work of art! Their technical level is unparalleled by anything I've seen by now too. You must think of going it professionally. Why not publish in Astronomy magazines? I would also dream of having this image as an art on the wall in my lounge.
    Simply Great!
    Thanks,
    Michael

Well, good lenses are expensive. But it is definitely uncomplicated. Setup is relatively straightforward, and without guiding, a lot of the extra hassle is cut out.

Looking forward to seeing your results. You definitely want to stop the lens down a bit from its widest aperture (at any given focal length). The widest aperture will often show aberrations, and stopping down will eliminate them. Even though the widest aperture on this lens at 300m was f/5.6, I shot this at f/8.

No - I find the LCD too small. I manually set the lens focus to infinity and then take some 15-sec test shots on a bright star to dial it in.

So when they all reject it because it's not good enough, I'll blame you guys for my depression at the rejection.

They can all reject it only because themselves would be not good enough to repeat it in print. Make a good portfolio anyway. It's not a cheap business - but your skill is well worth every cent of it. And my bet is - you will enjoy it.
