Last night's capture, in good seeing but miserable light pollution. 27 x 90 second subs, plus the usual darks, flats (twilight + tissue paper) and bias frames, ISO800. A crop from the center of the frame, cropped and stacked in DSS "custom rectangle" mode.

Looks great al. Please don't get offended, but is it me or does that image look a bit green?

Oh, it's greeen all right. For some reason everything is looking green to me these days. I maybe having white balance problems. I got some great green shots of the moon last night too.

I'm still just using DSS for curves and levels, and gimp for the rest, though. Probably there's a better image hiding in the data but I don't know how to find it.

And there's only about an hour's worth of data in there. More longer subs would be good but it's so darn bright around here with the streetlight and the neighbors...

Can you upload your final stacked file (TIFF is fine and before post-stacking processes step).
Just for experiment, I like to test some white balance adjustments.

BTW, this is normal that your raw images are green. I was told by pro that 50% of data in images is green and rest of it is red and blue.

Sure, I'd love it if you would like to try processing the data. It will take me a few minutes to find the right file (on a different computer) and upload it to a file-sharing site. Then I'll come back and post the URL here.

    Thanks !!

OK...Here's the link to the TIFF file. This is the output from DSS with adjustments not applied. It's 11.5 MB. I used DSS in "custom rectangle" mode to get the center of the full frame. Good luck !!
This isn't the DSS "autosave" file, but the file saved from the first window that displays the stack ready for curves and levels. If you can open the "autosave" file (which I can't in anything but DSS or CinePaint) and want that one, let me know and I'll upload it as well.

Great capture -out of the galaxy and into the next -that is very much DSO!

WRT to color balance issue - 2 things in DSS. First is do you have the set bacground to black and are you having use caeras white balance settings? Second is are you calibrating the different colors to the background indivisually or as a locked rgb group to the luminance. (these are checkboxes in the raw settings/processing part of DSS -I usually leave nearly everything unchecked if it doesn't have to be)

It's possible whatever the result and cause to go into a program like PSP (unsure of any freebees that will do this) and play with the color levels or curves. If all images are exhibiting the same - I'd try going in a changing the DSS settings and see what results if any.

Jim, it is amazing to see, even in a photo, that lonely galaxy hanging out there in empty intergalactic space. It's a galaxy very like the MW, but much more isolated and so its form isn't distorted by gravitational interactions. There have been some supernovae observed in NGC891...but I'm not going to be able to see them !!

I've been using either "custom" or "auto" WB in the camera. This shot was with "Custom" I think, but I don't have anything special programmed into the "custom" setting. I'll be trying "auto" for the next few sessions.

I don't know about all those DSS settings. I usually just play with the sliders until something looks better or worse; if it's worse I back up, if it's better I keep going.
I'm sure if I had PS I'd get better results, if I could figure out how to use it. But I just can't justify the expense right now...I'd much rather spend the money on a better camera.

Meanwhile I have severe light pollution and can't take long exposures except rarely. I'm expecting a good LP imaging filter sometime soon so maybe that will change a little.

But not everything I shoot is green...some of it is blue. Check out the picture of Orion Nebula I posted a little earlier today, also taken the same night as the NGC891.

Quite a bit of detail there. You captured a tough one can't wait to see after some more manipulation!!! Great work! What white balance settings are you using? Believe I use daylight setting was told or read somewhere that it gives best white balance for astro.
