    Default Hi from 365astronomy

    Hi Everyone!
    I'm the person running 365astronomy.com.
I've started it as a part time home based business in the very end of 2008 with the first sale in March 2009.
Since then 365astronomy has been continuously growing and now my son and wife also help me, although only part time; we have a part time accountant and the guys at iWebshop run our server and provide technical help when we need it. So feels like like a proper family business...

I am managing the business practically more than full time, about 15 hours a day...and mostly 7 days a week...
The idea behind the name "365astronomy" was to provide our customers with equipment, ideas and "Discovery for every day!" as our motto suggests... it wasn't intentional to keep myself busy for 365 days a year, but the name seems to be extremely influential...

Recently I received a call from a kind customer (a member of this forum) that some people started wondering whether we went bankrupt or so... no we didn't... We simply became more and more popular (and my sleeping time was greatly reduced) and since October it became more and more difficult to be as responsive to phone calls and emails as we used to be due to simple physical possibilities. In December, in one week we received as many orders as in the first year. We had to learn how to deal with it very quickly... I'm sure there are many happy customers who are very satisfied with their equipment that we supplied and I'm sure there are fewer customers who are not.
But to be honest, we were dealing with the increased traffic pretty well until about two weeks ago. Within few hours we received about 90000 emails to our email account. It wasn't spam, it was a technical fault at Yahoo's end that resulted in continuous flow of emails that we once already received; some emails were downloaded as many as 28 times... This happened shortly after the BBC Stargazing Live, just shortly before the Tax return deadline and a week or two before the VAT return deadline. This caused a little chaos in our system, especially regarding how we dealt with emails... it took about 10 days to get through these issues, and eventually we gave up on Yahoo and had to move to Googlemail. We now learn how to use it effectively and hope to recover from this major breakdown pretty shortly.
We might have unintentionally deleted quite a few important emails, so we ask our customers to be patient and contact us again if they feel their email was not answered.

On a more positive note, we will be introducing new exciting products later this year and hope to provide even better support (as we learn along the business). We will start three new blogs about telescopes, binoculars and microscopes, where we will provide extra support and information about a range of actual products/topics.

So we look forward to the year 2012 and hopefully we will be able to answer some questions on this forum as well as to add something valuable, too....

    Hi Alan,
Thanks for your comment! In general, I think Stargazing Live is a great TV program, it was just a bad "constellation of stars" above 365astronomy's sky when it started, but otherwise it brought us lots of orders, probably even more than we had before Christmas...so I cannot say anything bad about them... (hopefully they won't read it and send me an invoice... )

    Cheers

I just wanted to mention that Stargazing Live helped us to be busy again, although probably not as busy as a year before... They say recession is over... well, we don't really feel it... we had to do much more advertising this year than a year before and also we feel that the market is changing, people buy more telescopes at the lower end and fewer orders are coming through for very expensive telescopes than a year ago...

About the shop now... during the last year we introduced many new products and brought in many new suppliers as well, we'll also start selling cameras this year as photography is my other hobby... we'll focus on couple of brands like Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony and Olympus. We'll also try to couple night vision devices with telescopes as we see some undiscovered fields there... we'll have to come up with some adapters and test various devices, so this will take some time...
