Thanks for all the software links. My old Skymap pro couldn't even install any more. Best time to try out some new software!

I've been shopping for a planetarium program, something produced, supported and marketed commercially. I have The SkyX (free one) and Stellarium, but I've been looking at the others for premium features, support, updates and controls.

The Big 2 always come up...The Sky and Starry Night. in other locations, there is quite a discussion of Starry Night and how it has gone somewhat stagnant recently, with few updates and an uncertain future. The current developer/owner has chimed in confirming the lack of attention lately but also promising updates and even a new version coming.

Being a Mac user....looks like Sky Safari Pro has really taken over for us....having versions in both IOS and OSX.....I don't have any experience with it but comes highly recommended....and it's priced very well....

I love Skytools3, it is the most intuitive software out there. However,,,,I have an iOptron iE45 whose ioptron ascom driver will not play with it. I also use Voyager 4.5 which is not intuitive at all but drives the mount ok, just ok because Voyager is using an outdated interface that complains that everything is below the horizon. Carina says they know about the problem. Me thinks they have know about it for some time and have not touched their program for a long while. I place the ascom compatibility problem solely at the feet of SK3. This is where fantastic software becomes just OK. I haven't done TheSky because my mentor has a personal dislike for it (he has an astronomy PhD so I usually listen to him). Additionally, I do not like subscription software but that is not the real reason for dislike.

Bottom line is I use SK3 for viewing agenda then transfer to the iE45 Hand Box. Primitive but it works, as a computer guy it reminds me of the old sneaker net.

The iE45 is also a superb piece of equipment. I have no regrets on its purchase and drop ship from mainland China.
    Aloha

What about Guide9 by Project Pluto

I was given a copy of Guide7 by a friend recently and it excelled in finderscope chart making for deepsky stuff. I liked it so much I ordered version 9 for $45US and with its licence you can share copies.

Just getting back into Astronomy and wasnt aware of the abundance of stuff out there........

Anybody used Guide7, 8 or 9 and your thoughts on useability and how it stacks up

    Thanks Scott
