    Cool Software for a Newbie

I just purchased my first telescope and have been researching software. They range from free to $250! It’s hard to tell what I need and what I don’t. I know I don’t need scope control because my Dobsonian doesn’t have it. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Greg

    Hi Greg!

Stellarium is an excellent and free application. Cartes du Ciel is another, all free. These where show you what is in the sky, when, and where per your location. Good stuff.

An excellent phone/tablet app is Sky Safari.

Another good freebie" which looks similar in function to Cartes du Ciel (CdC) is Skytech X. I now use it more than I use CdC or Stellarium combined.

Here is a link to a list of Plantarium software:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planetarium_software

Something else you may want to consider is a Telrad finder (about $40) and then you can print some of the free Telrad charts like these:

I had a list on my now defunct website.

Apart from Stellarium, you can get hold of the Kindle app for PC or Mac or Android.

There's loads of free and low-cost reading material.

    my Noob question:
    introducing www.skymaponline.net
Here I see that on the forum you can talk about projects...
    I have a project. non-profit, non-commercial, website.
However, in the forum rules I read a lot of things that scared me. On the "competing sites" and the prohibition to talk about software.
I newbie in this forum. I can talk about my project?

KStars is another free planetarium software.

Depending on what you're doing you might also consider AstroImageJ, Fitswork, and Astrometrica (this one is not free).

Also try GIMP for image processing.
