    Default Software/Apps for Chromebook?

I may have made a mistake recently when I ordered a Chromebook without realizing that the OS was Chrome OS. The last hour is the first time I've used it and in some ways I like it but I'm not sure what I can load on it. Anybody else have one? Can you install Linux on it? What have I done?

    Hi Terry,

having your Chromebook is a little different to your PC - it uses Chrome OS, for a start. You can do anything on the web you would normally do, that's what they're designed for - so if you have favourite websites, you should be able to visit them without any issues. It's not going to run Windows software though, and I'm not sure if you can convert them to Linux - I believe, although I might be wrong, that Chrome OS is partly a web-based operating system, although you can still use it offline... App-wise, I think you're going to be able to run any of Chrome's extensions, plus some ChromeOS software (I imagine this exists, but I haven't looked).

It should be a pretty good machine for emails and web surfing, and a bit of office work.

I think at best you can load Android apps on it, no Linux for sure. It was meant to be purely web based originally, and it looks like Chrome OS is in a state of flux now that everything is running Android. Check Wikipedia: Chrome OS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia . A useful Android astronomy app would be SkEye, I believe there may be a Stellarium app as well. But no DSS or PHD, Windows is the mainstream for astrophotography.

There is a thread on Cloudy nights about an app that allows you to run Stellarium etc on the chromebook.

    http://www.cloudynights.com/topic/48...k#entry6322499

I own 3 CHEAP Acer chromebooks and love them all... wife uses one for e-mail and browsing the web (her only usage) I use one in my garage to keep traclk of my car maintance and parts I buy etc (I am heavy into older Corvettes that I restore) and one in my wood shop where I keep all my woodworking plans cut sheets ... I keep the records for the cars and wood shop on the Google cloud and google sheets
no problem pulling them down... if I need to print something the wireless printer works just fine...

That said..they will NOT replace a computer but for my usage and for quite a few people they sure can get the job done..
Best part..takes less then 10 seconds to open them up lon on and have your web page displayed..plus they keep themselves updated

    CHECK OUT THE ROLLAPP service....
