These are absolutely beautiful. I'm a little confused by the... surface(?) of Saturn though.

That's not to say it isn't pretty to look at, but would you care to explain? Love the reflection, by the way.

Thanks to all of you and your kind words

I'm sorry that I have taken so long to respond as I have been away for some time, obligated with retired life lately.

I have added some new works in various sites such as my main wesite
    - Pictures or also see recent digital photography af various night scenes and a recent 3,000 mile road trip through late September 2010 to deliver one of my large framed pastels to John Dobson for his 95th birthday at Griffith Park Observatory in Hollywood Los Angeles; Click on any of the images here and then "Fullscreen" and or "Start/Slideshow" at > Mark Seibold: Galleries: Digital Photography Review

*Telescope Boy- Yes, I started at producing the solar sketches first in October 2006, this one at Spaceweather.com was more an abstract to display motion and its being displayed at the NASA site is what is largely responsible for encouraging me to continue sending images to Spaceweather.com so often. From there I eventually trangressed to the moon, a few larger planets and more recently a scant of nebulosities. I am actually way overdue to produce more varieties of celestial work. I also rely at times from photographs that I have taken through the eyepiece for reference but would rather work from live direct observation at the eyepiece because more detail is realized this way, as time allows.

*Astronut74 - How is your sketching progress coming along?

    best regards,
    Mark

    Welcome back Mark.

I really like your "Moon at Last Quarter 1 August 2010." The others are great, but there is something special, at least to me, about the Moon at Last Quarter.

Just seen this thread , and boy am I glad I did. Those are just STUNNING sketches.

I do photography because I always wanted to be artistic but was *carp* at drawing and the like. Your post will probs make me rethink this attitude. Thank you.

Photographers have always asked, why would anyone waste their time sketching when one could just take a photograph?
I don't mean to knock photography as an art form, because I do enjoy the challenge of taking a good picture. But to me, an illustration or painting is much more pleasing to look at than a photo of the same object. I feel that if I've seen one photo of the Orion nebula, for example, then I've seen them all. They may be pretty, but they are no longer interesting to look at. Illustrations of the Orion nebula, however, each have their own personality because they were created using a mix of reality and the artist's interpretation of reality. When I look at a drawing or painting, I can get a sense of the artist's emotions when seeing the object, which I personally do not get from a photograph. Your illustrations of the Orion nebula -- though less accurate than a photograph -- do a better job of conveying the awe you must have felt looking at it than any photo I've ever seen.

Gorgeous illustrations! I'm getting more and more excited about getting my first telescope and cracking open my sketchbook

Thanks again Dublin Skywatch, Afigueroa, EricFD and Gene

Sorry I have been on the road since September 2010 and just now catching up to dated email as I returned home to the Portland Oregon area. My most recent work was a departure from the norm. I made a large pastel of John Dobson standing at one of his Dobsonian telescopes with a large gibbous moon overhead and female observer at the eyepiece in 20" X 30" black pastel paper format for his 95th birthday party at The Griffith Park Observatory on September 18th 2010 and drove over 1,000 miles to deliver it. That work may be viewed here > *See bottom of description text at the Cloudy Nights Gallery to hyperlink to DP Review for a yet larger image- When at DP Review, Click "Slideshow" and "FullScreen" in the top tool bar at the DP Review site listen in the text description> Telescope Reviews:
