Default Going for Messier 40 Award

Going to try for the Messier 40 sketch award! My first sketch is of M45. It's a little rough - I'm no artist, conditions weren't the greatest, and my scope needs better fine balancing. Hopefully you can recognize it!

Also, my writing is terrible at the best of times, but it was done on April 1st at 9:47pm using my (shaky) Celestron PowerSeeker 114EQ with 20mm eyepiece. I had originally sought out M103, but was unable to find it due to the sky conditions.

If the sketch isn't up to the challenge let me know, but I won't be able to redo it until the fall since M45 is behind the trees now.

    Cheers,

    Mike

Congratulations on starting out with the sketching awards program.

It can be very rewarding and helps you notice the finer details of the objects you sketch.
    Keep up the good work!

    Cheers

Hello Mike! This looks like a pretty good sketch to me, and certainly much better than anything I can accomplish. And I will second Clinton. Sketching will allow you to spend a lot of time with each of the Messier objects and you'll get to know them quite intimitely.

I'll bet the Virgo cluster will be interesting.

Thanks for posting your nice sketch Mike, and congrats on starting out on an excellent journey. I wish you best in this endeavor and I'm looking forward to your next sketches.

Hi Mike. A very nice sketch of 45 from you. I can easily make out the Pleiades in your work. Thanks for sharing this with us Mike, and the best of wishes on your M40 Sketch award mission.

I have finally had clear skies! Two more sketches to add to the pile. My Orion nebula sketch doesn't have a lot of detail, and I assumed that my scope was collimated properly. After a careful collimation I re-checked it and it appeared the same, so I left the sketch as-is. The beehive cluster was easy to find but I needed to use my binoculars to find it since the StarChart app on my phone was pointing me slightly lower in the sky than I needed to be.

    Cheers!
