    Example submission in M5 sketches

    M5 sketch by Photobiker
Thread for discussion: My run for the Messier 40

    Date: 24/09/2016
Location: Town Forest, South Berwick Maine.
    Conditions:
    Telescope: AR 102
    Eyepiece: 4.7 mm

Same deal with not centering the fuzzy. I wanted some reference stars so this is aligned a little off center.

Next steps, After the member has completed posting the sketches, send a PM to both dmbryan http://www.astronomyforum.net/members/dmbryan.html,
    and j.garvdaskyhttp://www.astronomyforum.net/members/j-gardavsky.html.

Please include a link to the thread and confirm wiki updates. A moderator will approve the posts with a follow up post.

Please note: Embedded sketches or links to other sites like flickr, personal vanity sites, etc. are not allowed as part of an application.

    FAQ
    1) If I add a future report to the wiki, for an object, and someone has a report on there will it erase their report?
No worries there is a history there which you can't really do damage as we can simply see past pages/edits As long as you don't copy on top or delete something, you will be ok.

    2) Do I not update my M30, M70 or M110 thread and only the wiki object page?
It is recommened to submit to your M30/70/110 thread as usual and the wiki page for each object ie Both.
Just keep a notepad with your details and it will be quite fast to add to the wiki pages. This will only a few seconds to each submission. Even better, it will allow you to compare to others observations for the same object with different apertures and viewing conditions.

    Two questions about the award.

    1) The award description speaks of categories of 40 / 80 / 110, but the automatic prefix is set for Messier 30 Sketches. Which is it: 30 or 40?

    2) The sticky says: >>2. The person making the application must have made each sketch unassisted.<<

I suppose this means unassisted by a third party. Does it also rule out using computer enhancement for sketches? More specifically, is it ok if one transfers the details of the sketch to a Photoshop file and then does an inversion (so that the sketch comes out as white stars on a night sky)?

As far as the business of using Photoshop or some other means of digitally enhancing a sketch, I would say this:

    1) By definition, the sketch has to be transferred into some kind of digital format in order to be submitted.

    2) It makes sense to allow participants in the program to manipulate their sketches digitally using whatever software program they want, just as it makes sense to allow them to use whatever scopes, eyepieces and tracking systems they want while observing.

Well have been on this sketching lark for more than 6 months and not even half way through yet. I notice the award says "sketch/photo award". If i ever get through this, could the award say just "sketch". This is purely from my elitist point of view as i reckon sketching is soooooooooooooo much harder than taking pics of the messier objects so don't want to be confused with the guys who take the easy route and able to recognise the other true stoics

ok good point, I will make a separate Sketching award for 2011, and 2012 as they should be different awards. I am sure the team will agree.

I finished sketches for 40 Messier objects.

Can I move on to the next 40? I guess I would title it: Messier 80 Sketch Program...
