Question Question about sketching and directions (NSEW)

I'm working on the Double-star list for the Astronomical League. I know that the direction that the stars move is always west, and that East and west are swapped because of the perspective, this I understand. But what about if I am looking at a star very close to the NCP or SCP. I see some drawings where N/S/E/W are not spaced 90 degrees apart. I was pretty sure I had a firm grasp on this but after looking at some sketches I'm not so sure any more...
    Thanks and clear skies!

When in doubt, refer to an astronomy program or an atlas.
