Default Some minor mods and a session with the NexStar 102GT (4-16-19)

I had to make some minor mods to this 102/1000mm (F/9.8) ‘frac in order to get the focuser up to eye-level from a seated position when the scope is pointed near the zenith.

First, shim the tube rings further with craft felt to insure a more snug fit, thereby preventing the OTA from slipping down the tube rings when pointed straight up:

Second, remove the 4” dovetail bar screwed onto the OTA, which is preventing the focuser end from being moved further up:

Once both mods were made, attached the scope on the Celestron SLT mount:

Transparency and seeing was about average. Started off by viewing some previously seen targets: Castor, Izar (Epsilon Bootes), the waxing gibbous moon.

Then tested this scope on some “new” doubles available on the NexStar database:

    1. Theta 2 Can (6.2, 6.3, 5)

    2. Iota Cancri (4.0, 6.6, 31) – colored double

    3. Kappa Boo (4.5, 6.6, 13) – colored double

    4. Xi Boo (4.7, 6.9, 6.4) -colored double

    5. Alpha Her or Rasalgethi (3.35, 5.3, 4.3)

Nice to be able to see overhead targets from my folding chair, without having to kneel down on the cold driveway cement.

Good mod. That ought to up the versatility of this OTA a great deal. Did you seal the screw holes at all?

Still cloudy here. Expecting severe thunderstorms today. This is the first lunar cycle that I’ve completely missed in several months.

I am starting to think I am in the astronomical armpit of the US.

Nice mode Terry! As Bryan I would suggest to cover the screw holes, even with electric tape.

Thanks Bryan! I haven't bothered sealing the screw holes on the OTAs from which I've removed the dovetail bars from - this comes to a total of six scopes. The dovetail is still screwed onto the blue F/12.9 Meade Polaris 70 'frac though.

Sorry to hear about the inclement weather. Clear skies projected tonight. Not sure if I'll go back out again, but if I do, I'll try to test out a "new" scope.

Thanks Michael. This scope will be easier to use now.

It'll be clear here again tonight...

I've not bothered to fill in the screw holes (yet) on the scopes I've removed dovetail bars from...

    Hi Terry,

When you moved the OTA further back in the rings, didn't this change the balance point for that OTA? If so, how did you account for that?

    Just curious,

The amount of stray light getting through holes is small, but then it takes only a few seconds to tape them over.

This makes quite a difference! I found out that a nice sitting position is so much more comfortable and lets you observe far more relaxed. As a result one sees more. Even the youngest observer (15 years old) at my local astronomy club had to admit it!
