    Hi everybody,

After a ridiculously long time waiting for a useable viewing night that didn’t conflict with any obligations or mid-winter illnesses, I was able to view a few more Messiers, which I have shown in the Messier Observations Wiki format.

There are also a few non-Messiers mixed in.

On 3/22/19 I took my 12” F/4.9 Zhumell Dobsonian out on my deck in town. Skies are Bortle 5-dull orange, according to the map. The moon was rising and just past full, so I used my push-to system for locating. I viewed three non- Messiers and M48 as follow:

NGC 2301,open cluster in Monoceros at 2249 hrs viewed through a 30 mm Zhumell Superview pasted here verbatim: “30mm, (50x), Large, &.T shaped, or foreground asterism of arcing stars. Just past full moon starting to cast light. 2 small arcs of stars near intersection looks like mini- little fish. Overall pattern looks like a mis-shapened 'X' w/ one leg much brighter.”

NGC 2244, open cluster in Monoceros at 2304 hrs viewed through a 30 mm Zhumell Superview : Large, spread out w/ 6or7 brtr strs roughly formng long rectangle. This one is within the Rosette Nebula, which was invisible under these conditions.

    Forum thread link:
    Messier Object: 48
    Date: 22 March 2019
    Time: 2320
Location: Northern Minnesota (Grand Rapids), USA.
Viewing Conditions: Fair to good transparency
    Light Zone: 5, dull orange
    Telescope Name: Zhumell
    Telescope Model: Z12
    Telescope Size:12"
    f-ratio: 4.9
    Eyepiece model: ES 68 deg
    Eyepiece mm: 20, (75x)
    Mount: Dobsonian alt-azimuth
Observation: Moon well elevated & near full . Enough brighter stars to see most of extent.. Pattern of about a dozen of these formed an approximate 65 deg angle overlain. Was small curved 'Y' shape in middle reminiscent of Perseus const.
    Comment: Open cluster in Hydra

NGC 3115, S0 lenticular galaxy , otherwise known as the Spindle Galaxy, Moonwash was increasing but was still able to locate w/ man. setting circles & 30mm eyepiece. Appeared as small, elongated glow.

    ————————————
On 4/3/19, also from the town of Grand Rapids, I recorded two more Messiers:

    Messier Object: 67
    Date: 3 Apr 2019
    Time: 2215
Location: Northern Minnesota (Grand Rapids), USA.
    Viewing Conditions: average transparency
    Light Zone: 5, dull orange
    Telescope Name: Zhumell
    Telescope Model: Z12
    Telescope Size: 12"
    f-ratio: 4.9
    Eyepiece model: Bushnell Ortho
    Eyepiece mm: 16.8, (89X)
    Mount: Dobsonian alt-azimuth
Observation: Looked large at this mag.
About a dozen stars on leading edge forming a claw-like arc reminds me of images of the Crescent Nebula, with the crescent opening in the direction of drift. I didn’t make a note of using a lower power, but think I must have in order to see the described shape, as this cluster is half a degree across.
    Comment: open cluster in Cancer.

    User: bradben
    Forum thread link:
    Messier Object: 37
    Date: 3 Apr 2019
    Time: 2238
Location: Northern Minnesota (Grand Rapids), USA.
    Viewing Conditions: average transparency
    Light Zone: 5-dull orange
    Telescope Name: Zhumell
    Telescope Model: Z12
    Telescope Size: 12"
    f-ratio: 4.9
Eyepiece model: ES 68deg, Zhumell Planetary
    Eyepiece mm: 20, 6 (75x, 250x)
    Mount: Dobsonian alt-azimuth
Observation: Dozens of moderately bright stars form irregularly shaped spread moderately condensed in middle region w/sllght haziness around condensation. One slightly brighter, slightly red star toward center. In 6mm(250X), the denser region was reminiscent of a brain's exterior w/ S's and tight arcs of stars embedded in faint, milky trackways. Striking view!
Comment: open cluster in Auriga, Located opposite the galactic center. Distance seems commonly estimated as 4500 lt yr.
