Thanks for another fine report Ray. Yup, 5053 is a tough one.

Gonna try for Jonck 900 tonight from my semi-dark site in Lebec, which is about Bortle 4.5 - similar to Del Valle. While I'm in the area, might as well do Abell 21 as well, although chances are slim that I'll see it.

Congrats on getting a customized 12.5 truss-dob! How long have you had your XT8?

Thanks Terry, good luck. I've had the XT8 for three years now, put on lots of mileage...

I was able to nail Abell 21 (Medusa Nebula) with the AR102 the other night. The thing is it was TOTALLY invisible without the UHC filter. No trace at all. But after I threaded on the filter it was visible as a dim but definite, uneven glow using averted vision.

The sky was dark and transparent, though, with a NELM around 6.5. I think light pollution, moonlight or haze would easily wash it out.

I would think that a decent sky would make Abell 21 a reasonable target for your XT8.
