Default Dark nebulae from dark site

    7/3/16

New moon at Anza dark site gave me nice opportunity to work on AL bright and dark nebulae lists. All observations were done with ES 102mm APO (714mm FL) and Orion 10x50 binos.

While waiting for darkness started with planets. Seeing could have been better. Still got pretty decent view of Jupiter in 3mm Radian (no GRS or moon transit today) and moved to Mars. I got new Baader Contrast booster filter to test and it did seem to improve the view, making Syrtis Major, Utopia and Mare Cimmerium easier to spot. Encouraging result but need to play around more to confirm.

    Now nebula time!

I have started with most grand of all – The Great Rift – it was well defined all the way from Cygnus to Scorpio. Could not make out Centaurus portion, because it was low in LP area.

Northern Coalsack – part of the Great Rift in Cygnus

Le Gentil 3 – another large dark “hole” in the Milky Way north of Deneb.

NGC700 – North America nebula, never managed to pick it from my home location. At the Anza dark site spent almost an hour playing with different filters and EPs in 102mm APO refractor. Finally, 2” 42mm (17x) with UHC filter yielded well defined southern portion of NGC700. 10x50 binos with UHC filter produced general outline, and finally confirmed the same shape with naked eye.

In the process also picked IC5067 – Pelican nebula – faint nebulosity around 56 Cyg; and dark nebula LDN 935 – black void separating NGC700 and IC5067.

IC5146 – Cocoon nebula – spent another hour messing around with EPs and filters for no use, until it occurred to me to look through binos and it was right there - small ‘blinking’ fuzzy spot with extra bonus, big ‘dark cigar’ stretching from it – B168

At the end of session decided to pick a few none-nebulous targets from my list:

    Scorpio:
Cr316 - wide scattered OC north from NGC6231, good for binos and wide EPs.
NGC6144 – H1 list - GC – small fuzzy spot, stars not resolved in 102mm APO

    Hercules:
NGC6229 – H1 list – GC – small, brighter core and halo visible, no stars resolved at 100x
NGC6207 – H1 list – galaxy next to M13, quite pleased that my little 102mm managed to pick elongated shape of this little 11.8 mag smudge at 100x no problem.

    Andromeda:
When I was about to wrap up noticed M31 rising up. Could not miss a chance to say hi to an old friend. One of the best views I ever seen. No dark bands visible but disk filled all 2.4 degree AFV of ES 68 24mm.

    Clear Skies!

Fun stuff, man, and a nice session.

I think I might work on some the dark neb stuff. Between you and Milan and JG, my interest has perked up a bit.

Wonderful report Bigz! Never went out looking for dark nebulae, mainly because I rarely get out to a green zone site or darker.

Never been to Anza Borrego Desert, but I hope to (with the help of a friend) sometime soon. I know they have the Nightfall Star Party there in the autumn.
