Cool My Road to the M70

One more observation towards the M70 last night, in addition to the ones that finished off the M30:

31 - M2 - 8.16.2015 2237 (8.17.2015 0237 UT) - Yep, it's a GC. Small, fuzzy patch, with a single brighter star just off to the East. Unable to resolve any stars at 42x or 114x. It is slightly more resolvable at 187x and the cluster itself becomes more shapely.

    Status: 31 of 70

    ** Non-Messier obsevations **

Alpha Hercules - Double Star 8.16.2015 2210 (8.7.2015 0210 UT) - The RASC handbook has this listed under its "Coloured Double Stars" section as a Red/Green pair, that is VERY TOUGH to split as their separation is only 5". Indeed it was tough to split, I was unable to at any magnification split the pair. It was also a very strong ice blue coloration, not red/green which I assume would come with splitting. The atmosphere was pretty turbulent last night, so I expect that is part of not being able to split. I suspect 5" is difficult under the best atmosphere for the AD10.

    ** Missed Targets **
    M53/M101/M102/M51/M63 - Clouds rolling in
M80 - Should have been able to view this, it was on my plan, but I let it get away from me.
V CrB - I have a large maple tree in my yard that this was hiding behind by the time I was ready to view it. Need to plan that better.
M19/M62 - A different tree and house. Should be clear of that soon though.

    ** Additional **
Saturn - At this point, it is reflex for me to view Saturn, and not record the observation. I need to do better about recording it when I do.

Good job Brett, thanks for the report! I have a similar tree problem, so I have to wait for some objects to clear the trees before I can see them.

Good start on the M70, Brett..

As for Alpha Her, you really shouldn't have much trouble splitting that with your AD10. 5" is twice as wide as the components of the double-double Epsilon Lyrae, which is fairly easy with my XT8. You may want to double check your collimation..

Huh, thanks for that. I did not collimate before I observed. I should be able to get out tonight, if so, I will check that and give it a shot again.

    Good start on M70 Brett!

Trees like to hide things alright. I had tree trouble on the Helix Nebula the other night. Then by the time it was high enough, I couldn't pick it out anyway.

Hope you get some clear sky opportunities soon before the moon ramps up.

Default Re: My Road to the M70

It did end up being clear again last night, so I got a few more M's and an embarrassing story of what I originally thought was an M object, but did not feel right, and it wasn't. All because I got my directions messed up.

I will log the successful M objects tonight, but first the story:

I am happily observing M20 and M21 (beautiful objects together, btw). After a few minutes, and EP changes and such, I know that M8 is in the general area. Ok, I know I can get that one too.

Put the 30mm EP back in, Start at M21, and go up...hmm...can't get it...ok, keep trying. Go a few more times...well the sky is bright-ish over that way...maybe it is just too bright and dim for it to pick up....swap out to the 11mm. Start at M21...pan up....wait is that it....it is awfully faint...but there is something there...I think....sure...there is....**tap tube** yep, something..I think....ok, I will log it, provisionally. very faint patch, two stars to the E/SE. Doesn't really feel right.

Now does anyone see my mistake.....

If you said start at M20 and go DOWN instead of M21 and go UP you would be right.

    Whoops.

Note in the log book that whatever I saw was NOT M8. I am not sure what it was, or if it was. Something that may warrant further looking the next time I am out, as well as finding M8 the next time I am out.

Oh well, live and learn, right?

Full observation report later tonight. I will say, I didn't realize I had such a view of Sgr and it's treasures from my yard, spent most of the night hunting M objects in it. Picked up 3 new ones.
