    Default Finally M13! kinda......

    Hi everyone

Tonight I decided to try to find that impure, elusive, sneaky bastard some people call M13... I call it the SOB 1. I could not go to my secret spot "THE DUMPSTER" because I have an injured hip and "The Black Beast" is not easily portable as ORION claims. Just 41 pds, tilt it and just carry it with the handle.. yeah right! I had to settle for my balcony, which is awful, LP bounces from the walls, security light posts, neighbors.... just a star gazers dream! I started early so I could try to find M13 aka SOB 1, I was able to find 44 Her also 40 Her.
I started using the 32mm EP then the 25mm EP. For the first time I was able to star hop into M13! I was confused because all I could see was a smudge and last time I was able to find a couple of Clusters they appear as a smudge but after switching from the 32mm to the 25mm the smudge turned into a awesome faint group of start! Not tonight... I started a quick thread (live) looking for answers or suggestions. I was not disappointed, people quickly replied and helped. I learned of such things as transparency (what?) cooling the Scope, humidity and other stuff I never heard of.

I always thought, no clouds lets do this!!!! and go outside... wrong!
I am very happy that this was my actual first time star hopping to a DSO and knowing what I was looking at, I can't lie, I was disappointed, looking at M13 and not been able to see it clearly.

I had dinner and decided to go after SOB 2... I mean M57. I tell myself, I got this! You are the master now.... hahhaha.. I found Sheliak without much problem using Stellarium and my 32mm and 25mm EP's. I had to wait a while for Sulafat to show, it was behind a palm tree. Yes Miami. Fl. Now I was ready, I
had the two stars, all I need to do is follow the Images, looked pretty simple.. but NOOOO.
I spent like 2 hours going back and forth between stars, EP's and Stellarium. According to Stellarium M57 should have been on my eyepiece while using the 32mm EP.. I never saw it. I finally got tired and I am guessing my Stellarium is messed up, my EP is crooked and all the stuff you guys posted.
Humidity, transparency, warm scope and other stuff is to blame..
I call this a success because I my FIRST lDSO using star hopping and not guessing. It feels great. I found M13 even though I could not enjoy its splendor.

I really want to thank everyone that posted on my "live" thread to help me out!

Congrats on your first successful star hop, Tomas! Even though you couldn't bask in the full glory of M13, you still found it, and that's a great accomplishment.

I'm not surprised, given your description of M13, that you could not see M57. It's a lot smaller in the FOV. Bad transparency and LP killed it.

Man, I hope you can find a dark site sometime. I'd love to read of your reaction on M13 on full display.

Great job anyway Tomas! You deserve a big pat on the back for what you did. Or at least an ice cold beer.

You did well finding M13. Don't give up on it though. In better transparency, with equipment that is acclimated, it is an amazing cluster that can really take a lot of power.

I'm an old Florida boy too, with a second home there... fully equipped with telescopes that aren't in my signature.

When your hip is up to a "road trip", head down A1A in the Keys. By the time you hit the seventy-five mile marker, you'll find plenty of dark skies and the Miami light dome, while still visible on the northern horizon, will not be a factor. There are quite a few cheap, but decent little motels along that stretch whose "backyard" faces either the Gulf or the Atlantic. I often make a reservation (call 'em, as on-line ain't gonna work.) for Friday & Saturday nites... leaving my equipment set up behind my room. (Yes, most rooms have a back door that opens on the water side. If it's your first time down that way, it might be wise to make a scouting run ahead to time to check out the venues.

    Plus... the food is great!
