Default GRS and a Messier Hunt

Ok. Tonight I was able to get a bit of time off from tax season. So I was able to pick up the following in my Messier 70:

M47 which was a bit faint and loose set of stars with about 8 or so relatively brighter stars
M46 which was a degree or two lower than M47. Not much distinguishing characteristics to this one either
M48 which was about 12-13 degrees to the north of M46. There were a fair amount of faint stars, but the most distinguishing feature was a dark area in the center that looked like a bent finger (pinky finger)
M40 the double star just a degree or so below and to the west of Megrez in Ursa Major

While these get me to a mediocre 15 total in my Messier 70, the real highlight was Jupiter (when isn't it) and more importantly the Great Red Spot. I was able to see it transit about halfway across Jupiter tonight. This was my second time to see it. Always very cool to see.

Ok ...I am debating with myself to get up early in the morning to catch a good number of Messier objects in Sag in the morning....Need to check Sky Safaro for Sag's time to rise and then decide.

I tell ya, it is really tough to see. Not only do you have to time it just right - it seems to me you can only see it within about a half hour either way of the transit time, and not the 50 minutes or hour that is commonly quoted - but you also have to have pretty good seeing. I just saw it tonight for the first time after hunting it for the past 3 months and getting skunked time after time.

    Keep trying, it'll come!

I only saw it 2 times out of 25 attempts (I think I saw Jupiter every night I was out, but I have to go back and see if that's true), so it's not easy and it wasn't obvious to me. Maybe with a blue, green or Baader Moon and Sky Glow filter, I'll be able to see it. I'll add those to my ever growing list of "gear" to acquire.

Just wanted to make sure you knew about this site:

Log In - Sky & Telescope

It was very accurate tonight! And like I said, although the website says you can see it for 50 minutes before and after the transit time, I found tonight that it was really only about 30 minutes before and after, so it's a pretty narrow window.

I have yet to catch the spot, tomorrow night may be my chance. The transit is near midnight my time, when Jupiter will be very high in the sky.

Ruger4d4, it isn't easy to see. It has taken me about a year to time it right. I haven't checked Jgroub's S&T weblink, but I suspect it is the same as their iPad app (Jupitermoons by S &T) which is great for timing various jupiter events, including seeing the GRS. I got it about a month or so ago and it helped me time my viewing to see it.

S&T has one for Saturn too. I haven't used it yet.

BTW, it was a no go this morning. I tried to get out, but my dog got out and wanted to argue with a coyote. So I spent the early hours of the morning trying to get my Yorkie (who sees himself as a pitbull and isn't) back in the house and not be a coyote appetizer.
