    Default First Steps into AP

2 weeks ago I attended a star party for the local astronomy club I recently joined. After meeting and talking with one person there doing AP with his C8, I decided to give my first try last night.

I attached my canon 50D with a Starizona T-adapter for the 1100HD and used BackyardEOS. Since this was my first time I was a bit sloppy with alignment, and only did 2 alignment starts with 2 calibration stars. I didnt have a reticle eyepiece so I just defocused the stars to center them.

took some time to get acquainted with the software, but then I was able to start testing different exposures. 10 seconds seemed to be the limit before i started to get streaking.

Most of my shots I left at 3200 ISO and 5sec exposures.

I just did some playing around with in DSS with the RGB levels and saturation. I'm going to order some books to start learing processing and how to best use my 50D.

    Here are some pictures

    Andromeda
1x30sec with 5 darks (4 other lights got tossed by DSS)

    Hercules
    10x5sec with 10 darks

    Ring Nebula
    10x5sec with 10 darks

Next time out I'm going to give the ASPA a go, as well as input more calibration stars and my coordinates rather than nearest big city. I'm hoping to get 30 seconds unguided next time around

Very nicely done. A C8 without a focal reducer or guiding is very had to image with. I think if you do a 2 star alignment with 4 calibration stars, then ASPA, you'll be able to get much longer exposures. Up to a point, each time you repeat the 2+4 and ASPA routine your alignment will improve. Also, you can use BYE to do your alignments. One advantage is that you can get very precise centering using the zoom box. A disadvantage is that you'll heat up you camera sensor. If you wait around 10 minutes to start imaging after alignment you should be well enough cooled down to mitigate that issue.
