Default Jupiter GRS put on a great show tonight 12/22/2013

...It was the best I've ever seen it. At 100x in my Starblast I could see 4 belts: the north and south equatorial belts and temperate belts. I couldn't discern the division in the South equatorial belt though. I could also clearly see shading in both polar regions and the planet King was definitely sporting an orange or light rusty color. I started viewing almost as soon as the transit started but had to wait a few minutes for the GRS to rotate more clearly into view. And then there it was...a distinct darker rust colored patch in the SEB. I had no doubt what I was viewing unlike the last couple of years. A clearly discerned oval shape putting a gap where the belt should have continued. An outstanding view. Then I bumped up the magnification to 164x, but being somewhat skeptical that the scope would be able to hold the image. Wow, was I surprised. The image held perfectly. A little dimmer for sure, but the 4 belts and the spot itself dominated the scenery. What a great view. I had a great weekend with Jupiter having seen the shadow transit of Europa last night. Very satisfying.

GREAT REPORT!!! I still have not been able to see the GRS. If it ever clears up I'll be gunning for it.

Friday is promising a great show as well, at least according to Stellarium. Ganymede is transiting the face of Jupiter and will be directly over the GRS all night. It should be quite spectacular.

Hi Don. This is a great report from you. It sounds like your sky was exceptionally good, and you made the most of it. Seeing four of the belts and polar cap in their nice colors must have been a real treat. And, catching the GRS and Io transit shadow was the clincher. Thanks for your fun report Don, and I hope that you get many repeat performances like this again soon.
