    Default First sighting!!

    Hello everyone.

Last night I had clear skys so after I got off work I set up the scope for some viewing. I've been working on the Jan. observing list from my local club and around 12:30am happened to be looking at The Hyades. I noticed on stellarium that Vesta was pretty close to Aldebaran so I thought I'd see if I could find it. Picked out a couple of asterisms close and got to work. It took me quite a few minutes of changing between ep and spotter but eventually I did spot it. Was able to confirm it was Vesta by checking out a couple of other star charts and find that there is nothing at that location on any of them but almost exactly where Stellarium shows it. Looks like there is another "star" in the field as bright or brighter even than the surrounding field stars.

I know it's not the most exciting target but I was as excited or more than I generally get when finding a cluster or other DSO. This is the first time I have sighted a meteor through my scope I just love finding what you are looking for.

    Clear skies,

    Uri

Just realized my mistake and it's too late to edit. I suppose Vesta is an asteroid not a meteor. Sorry I get excited

Thanks for the report. I completely understand how you feel. It is quite an accomplishment and makes you feel really good to find something like that.

It is exciting because you had to do some detective work, tested your observational skills and found something 9/10 of the people on this planet may not even be aware of. I think that is definably something to be amped about

Well done! Never seen an asteroid myself. I recall a couple of comets (Hale-Bopp & Hyakutake) but even those weren't through a scope. Rock on!

I think it was good luck. It just happened to be close to where I was observing and in a fairly empty part of the sky. If it sits in a heavily populated field I don't think there is much chance of my positivly identifing it.

    Thanks all,

Great job on finding Vesta and thanks for the report! I've never seen it but look forward to trying to find it. I'll put it up there with Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto as solar system objects I've never viewed.

Hi Uri. Now this was a great report. I am so happy that the scope that you got recently is kicking out the views for you. And the analysis that you did with the star charts and Stellarium on verifying Vesta is great work. Thanks for the report, and keep us posted on your next adventure. Best of regards.
