    Default Albireo (double star)

    Just completed a great session observing Albireo or beta Cygni in my Z10. The primary is a brilliant gold and the companion is bluish purple. It was a beautiful sight! Has anyone had a similar experience with this double? The moon is up so it was not a great night for DSO's.

    My favorite double and I believe the brighter is a tight binary start itself.

    yup I get it love to use it for alignments just to look at it each time.

    Yup. I was out showing that one to my Mom last night. Her eyes are quite a bit different from mine, so she needed to refocus. I could tell when she reached focus though by the audible gasp.

    Default Re: Albireo (double star)

    Hi, I agree Albireo is cute (it is my avatar pic!), but check out these, which I can resolve (in color, kind-of) with my 4.5". they will be a show in your 10" !

    a) gamma delphini: a lime/yellow pair, even in my 4.5 inch;

    b) 61 cyg, an orange pair;

    c) omicron1 Cygni: in a scope FOV you'll see a triple made of o1 cyg itself (yellowish, mag 3.8), 30 cyg (blue-ish, mag 4.1) and HIP99676 (also blue, mag 7). see the picture attached: very poor because it's a 4 sec shot with hand-held DSLR !

    actually 30 is unrelated orbitally, while o1 (alias 31), HIP, and o2 make up a real orbital system. you'll see o1 and o2 best with a binocular, as 2 is out of your FOV if you use, say, a 20mm ep on a 4.5 in).

    if you haven't tried the lyra doubles (eps, delta, zeta, beta) do so by all means: epsilon especially is a (almost) naked eye double whose members are themselves doubles. I cannot resolve them with the ep's I have on my 4.5, but a 10" will make it easily.

    another nice double in lyra is a struve pair near m57, if you ever are in that neighborhood. about 1 degree north of m57. notice I spotted all of these without finder (my bad... I use the OTA braces for rough alignment), so they must not be so difficult to spot.

    have fun !
