Setting a precise altitude on a dobsonian is easy with a digital angle gauge. The gauge reports absolute angles (as well as relative) and is mounted magnetically on the scope tube. This gauge is rated to 0.1 degree precision.

There's an app for iPhone and iPad for this and you can callibrate it with a good spirit level, just a thought.

What a great idea. I have one of these in my wood shop and use it all the time for setting my tooling up. I'd have never thought of using it for this purpose.
