    Default Whats making that sound???

I need to find a video of various wild life sounds so I can tell what's making noises in the woods at the edge of the flying field where I observe.

Last week I was at the flying field with the scope. Off in the distance I heard a sound I've never heard before. Something akin to a raspy hacking sound. Over the course of several minutes the occasional hacking sound drew closer. Not close enough to be alarming but close enough to warrant some action on my part. I decided to make my presence known and began to loudly mimic the raspy hacking sound as best I could. I did these two or threes times.

Then it dawned on me..."What if that sound is its mating call?"

I immediately change tactics and coughed loudly. Whatever it was quickly scampered away heartbroken.

This is why I usually take a radio with me. Most animals will usually hear the sounds and not come around.

    Raspy hacking sound?

    A cat with a hairball?

Man, I've got no idea on that one. Sounds alarming though.

One night in the backyard I had something tall and four-footed trotting toward me and at every other footfall it would grunt. That raised my hackles considerably until I realized it was a deer.

At a dark sight, just as I was honing in on a small dim galaxy, something galloped past me so closely I could feel the wind of its passing. Sheesh. Made it kinda hard to concentrate after that.

    Gollum???

I use a whole arsenal of deterrents. Music usually played through the CD/DVD player in my laptop. A night vision scope for the smaller creatures. And my night vision busting 2,000,000 candlepower high beam torch for the big nasties - bears, pumas, coyotes (although they're not really a threat), Elk, etc. That torch comes in handy at a dark site gathering of friends star party when an unexpected cloud layer comes in and covers the sky. This typically leads to somebody going off for a quick trip to the "bushes". Well, being the helpful person I am, I shine the torch on them so they can see what they're doing... and so can everybody else. That one always generates a laugh!!!

    Cheers,
    JT

PS. the torch NEVER gets shined on females! Not cool.

Try googling "sound of night heron" and "sound of great blue heron." I have heard those at night down by the swamp, and it is very unsettling.

    Hi Rick,

I have COPD and some memory issues as well, so It's possible that I was close by and don't remember being there.

Seriously though, having spent a lifetime in the outdoors, both day and night, all the sounds don't bother me. I've had some very close encounters with wildlife and with the exception of a curious skunk that came within a few feet and hung around for several minutes, I've never been nervous about any of them. I do my thing and they do theirs. When our paths happen to cross, I enjoy every minute of the experience. Then again we don't have grizzly bears or mt lions here, either.

Have you ever heard a deer snort? They inhale deeply and blow the air out with a short, forceful whooshing sound. That's a possibility.

Foxes can sometimes make an alarming hacking bark like that, if I recall correctly. And yes, staying away from mating sounds is smart

Like a "gaaahhhsh" sound? I was at a cabin in Door County, Wisconsin earlier this year when I swore I heard a big cat hissing. Cougars have been spotted in Wisconsin, so that was pretty unsettling. Doing some research though it turns out nobody has recorded a cougar sighting in Door County, so it was most likely a whitetail deer.

Later in the year, I was camping in southern Wisconsin and carrying my OTA to my pod using a red headlight. Standing next to my tripod was a whitetail deer, staring back at me. I guess s/he was curious about the three-legged white thing standing in the dark.

Yup most likely a fox. When I was a kid there was a red fox that was hanging around the house, and I would describe the sound it made exactly as you did.
