    Default Referendum on Streetlights

The city where I live is going to be moving the current electric system (which is on poles) to underground. As part of that, the streetlights in my neighborhood will be replaced by another type of light that is solar powered. For a short time there is a chance to publicly weigh in on the decision at the city council meetings, so you can bet that I will be there representing the interest of astronomers in this opportunity to influence the powers that be that astronomy is important, and that the new lights are shielded to prevent too much light spillage.

So I hope I am successful!

Good luck with that Michael - often safety is their primary concern (therefore the brighter the better). After conversion to LED lights in San Ramon, I requested that the city put a light shade on the streetlight that borders our backyard flooding it with light. They refused to do it citing safety reasons. I had originally requested PG&E to install a shade thinking the streetlights were theirs and they were willing to accommodate me until they realized that the city owned the lights.

P.S. Sorry to hear about the passing of your dad.

Unfortunately it's not really safety, it's LIABILITY. And, if they can save money. Might be a good idea to do a little research on cities that have implemented light pollution technology. Just a thought. Regards, Bill

Good for you Michael, wish I could do that here! Best of luck, and I hope your voiced opinion is heard and valued; it should be

BTW, when I saw the word "referendum" on the New Posts list, I immediately thought of where I'm from originally (Montreal, Quebec) and said to myself, "Oh no, now what??!!" Been there, voted, done that

This is certainly a better vote; I hope it goes in your favor!! Insert Smiley here with fingers and toes crossed...

Good luck with this Michael. It would be great if the interests of us dark-sky people were heard!

Our town recently asked for feedback on three models of lights they are looking to select from in place of the old sodium lights we have currently. They put in a pair of each on different streets for us to see, and asked for responses to be sent to the Town Engineering office. I checked them out, gave them my preference and some advice about the purpose and usefulness of light blocks, and that was the last I heard about it. I guess I'll have to follow up to see what might be going on there.
