    Default Comet and asteroids question

    1. Lately ss5p does not put the asteroids right. I go to the site and nothing is there!! What can I do? I tried on Vesta, it is there. But I tried on five 10 mag asteroids and nothing! And it was ok before!! What can I do?

    2. I am thinking of taking the 5dob out tonight from the block to see the 21p/ Giacobini/Zinner comet... but if the asteroids are put wrong, maybe this is too! Can someone pls check for me if the comet is currently beside the star HD 7757, like my skysafari says?

    Thank you in advance!

Skysafari should be set to do a update on this data once a month to show the positions accurately.

To do this manually, open the settings tab and then open the solar system tab, scroll to the very bottom and click on the update minor body orbit data.

    Hope that helps?

Thanks, King, but it actually doesn't help at all. I cannot approximate its position. can u pls write in hd 7757 into your ss5p and see if it is in the fov of the comet, beside it?

I updated, but it said last update was on aug. 4th... nothing changed when I looked up the position of a few things...

Ok, here is the screenshot with HD 7757 centered.
The blue circle is my 8" dob FOV so it should be the same for yours and as you can see the comet is just in view.

Thanks for everything, King! Success!! I went out, unfortunately the sky sucked right there at Cassi, but I got this one Get-out-of-jail-free card from wifey and I wanted to capitalize! Got to the location with the 5dob, in 25mm nothing, well that is disheartening, but you're dealing with a pro hunter here, sky, so there, let me see you in the 10mm, there she blows in averted vision, and then at 6mm I could see it in direct vision! Very faint gery fuzzball with nothing extra but some nice big red letters all over it saying: SCORE!!

Thanks again for all your help!

Glad you were successful in tracking the comet down Milan. Always nice to see these visitors that we may never see again in our lifetimes.

Congrats on catching the comet Milan! I would say I am getting positions of comets and asteroids in SS5p accurately ~80% of times. Often they are just a bit off but still in the same FOV. Couple of times they were way off with database updated. I guess even precise science can misfire once in a while.

On asteroids it gets magnitudes accurately, but on comets both size and magnitude seems to be off. I use comet chasing to verify comets data
