Default Eyepiece holder on etx 90RA. Threads stripped, can't secure eyepiece

So this is the original ETX. The one that just had a battery motor, no hand control or computerization. I really don't overtighten the thumb screw that secures the eyepiece, but suddenly, I noticed that the thumbscrew just spins. It will start to bite ever so slightly, then come back to square 1. Without an eyepiece in, I can see that I can push the thumbscrew into the threads a bit, where I shouldn't be able to, before the threads kick in. It seems like the area right where the standard 1.5" eyepiece contacts the screw is right where the issue is, because even a 1/4 turn further, and the thumbscrew bites properly and is firm, no slipping. But short of bending the eyepiece sidewall inwards to get the screw deeper (That's a joke by the way lol)...I'm at a loss what to do here. The screw itself doesn't appear to be damaged, which makes me think the threads. Further, the design of the eyepiece holder is more or less built in to the body of the scope. So I can't just replace the holder. I can't glue it in for obvious reasons. But I'm on a gem mount, and a little testing shows that the eyepieces will slip out without hesitation if the angle is below level. And that's not to mention if I wanted to use something that actually requires securing and can't spin around. Thoughts?

My ETX seems to have a 3mm eyepiece screw. I would go slightly larger and buy a 4mm replacement screw and m4-.7 tap. I see some available on ebay.
