Default Celestron vs Meade vs Orion vs Skywatcher

Celestron vs Meade vs Orion vs Skywatcher, which company makes the best optics(telescopes)? Obviously Celestron, Orion and Skywatcher are all manufactured by the same company, Synta, but which company do you guys think gives the best quality telescopes overall? Try not compare particular telescopes but review the brands overall.

I own several scopes from all four, no noticeable difference optically. Celestron and Orion sell a better lighter weight goto alt/az mount than Meade. I do not have a SkyWatcher mount.

I have three Celestron, Orion and Meade. As far as optics I'll have to go with Celestron. It's kinda like saying which is a better automobile Nissan or Infiniti, both are Nissans. The Infiniti is their high end car. That's what I think of Celestrons optics. Software is another story.

I have Orion and Sky-Watcher Maksutov scopes. Apart from aperture size, OTA colour and dovetail position I can't see any difference in them. I have both Orion and Sky-Watcher ST80 achromatic refractors (both retro-fitted with custom focusers). Apart from the colour there is no real difference. Although the dew shield on the Orion ST80 was much easier to remove than the Sky-Watcher shield due to a velcro type patch on the inside of the shield, which the Sky-Watcher lacked.

    IMG_20180119_110459.jpg

Astroshop.eu now sell a black 'Omegon' ST80 which is almost certainly Synta made. The Meade equivalent is probably just as good, Meade stuff usually is in my experience. Orion include better quality accessories sometimes, but they make you pay for them.

'You pays your money and takes your choice' as they say.

Default Re: Celestron vs Meade vs Orion vs Skywatcher

The world of optical astro gear is a very small one. Incestuous really.

Synta is the patrent company of Skywatcher, Celestron, Tasco and a number of others. Meade is owned by the parent company of Explore Scientific. Zhumell is a division of GSO.

    But it doesn't stop there.

The number of ACTUAL manufacturers is even smaller, and these few firms make the optics (lenses, mirrors, eyepieces, tubes, castings for mounts, etc) for all and sundry. Orion are essentially Skywatcher products, same with Saxon in Australia, and other brands are re-brands of others following sub-contract deals.

Even the optics of Celesron and Meade HD and Edge scopes come from the same source.

Celestron and Meade started in the USA ONLY making SCT's. They were bought out by Chinese interests and now added to their line up are rubbish little scopes.

Even TV products are now made in China because there is where the quality manufacturing is now happening - very little is made in Japan today! Even the stuff from Japanese brands, most components areactually Chinese in origin, and assembled in Japan with some Japanese made components. And those Chinese madecomponents all come from the same few manufacturers.

From all of these "different" firms, one thing remains true - quality costs money. That is a universal truth that is also seen in the more exclusive brands such as Hubble Optics, Obsession, and my own Gondwana Telescopes.

In the end you get what you pay for. And thrown into the mix are some real gems that are either obscure, inexpensive or just carry the "wrong branding".

The final purchasing decision is then yours based on your own research, preferences and prejudices. We all have them as we are all human. Well, mostly...

    Alex.

All 4 brands have premium scopes, mid range products and cheap junk. I don't believe there is any quality difference between companies as brands.

I also don't believe Celestron is a premium brand of Synta. For instance Celestron currently does not offer any APO or ED refractors, but Orion and SW do.

I think Celestron is basically a SCT and refractor supplier.

Under the "Celestron" brand you now will also find crappie little Newts (FirstScope), kiddie-marketed microscopes, prepared slides for microscopes, weather stations", and other bits and bobs. Far from the US made SCT's and Japanese made refractors and Newtonians while they were still US owned. The Celestron brand today carries The Good, The Bad and The Ugly...

I like the optics of the William Optics scopes, but I don't like their mounting compared to the skywatcher scopes, dreadful for balancing, and doesn't come with a finderscope.

Otherwise I use Skywatcher, nicely designed for practical use.
