Default This is why I do outreach...

Today, I was reminded that outreach is more than just setting up a telescope on a sidewalk somewhere and letting folks take a peek. Even a website can become a great outreach tool. Here's an email I received in my inbox this morning that really made my day:

My son Liam and I just wanted to send you a quick email to say thanks. Liam's in boy scouts, and is working to earn his astronomy badge. For the past couple of weeks the boys have been learning about all about it, so Liam's been doing a lot of research lately and that's how he found your page Tom's Equipment. It's been so great for him I wanted to reach out and thank you. I can't remember the last time I've seen him so invested in or excited about something. He even asked us for a telescope for his birthday next month lol.

When I told Liam I was going to email & thank you, he suggested(insisted) I let you know about a beginner's astronomy page he found online, "Backyard Astronomy Basics" at https://www.homeadvisor.com/r/home-s...ard-astronomy/ . He thought it could be a good addition to the resources on your page. I know Liam found it to be helpful, so hopefully you find some use for it too.

    Thanks again!

Fantastic! That sort of feedback and the "OMG - that's really xxxx" fill in the name - ie Saturn. That's what makes it all worthwhile - be it kids or adults! In the navy we hoist the bravo and zulu flags (BZ) which means "well done!" So BZ to you!

Thanks for reminding us that outreach goes beyond just the basics of looking through the eyepiece for two minutes on the sidewalk.
