I'm with Alan on this one.

Besides the fact that everything revolves around me, if we were to educate the general public too much, they might forget how smart we are.

    Imagine a neighborhood brunch...

John: "If you folks will excuse me, our magnitude -26.77 star will be above the 2x air-mass at 0951 hours and the solar transit will be at 1126 hours with an altitude of 34.4 degrees. I'll be capturing one thousand frames with my f/7.5 scope at sixty frames-per-second and an exposure time of ten milliseconds."

Mary asks Jane: "Where is he going?"

Jane replies: "To take a picture of the sun."

Now, I ask you... Who is more fun at a party?

In closing this thread, please have pity on your students and don't complicate life for them. A rose by any other name is still a rose. In the English language the words sunset and sunrise do have specific meanings for the events. There is no need to use a sentence or two to define the events unless you are writing a word picture of a particularly beautiful or interesting sunrise or sunset.
