Default Celestron Nexstar 102GT - 1000mm f9.8 - Focuser Upgrade and Diagonal Upgrade

Ready to make full use of my newly acquired 102mm with GoTo mount. Would like to upgrade the focuser and diagonal. There are dozens if not more choices out there and would like to know of anyone's experience of good, better, and best while keeping the prices reasonable for a scope of this quality.

Good: GSO two-speed Crayford (GSO96 with properly sized adapter) You can call Manish or Tom at Agena to ensure the correct flange. Just be sure to measure the diameter of your OTA before you call.

If you're gonna hang a DSLR on that puppy, GSO also makes a linear bearing model 2x Crayford. Again, talk with Agena.

    Best:
If you're going to do AP, Moonlite all the way. Period. Just email Ron Newman (owner of Moonlite) at moonlite7@live.com . He'll build you one. That's one in my avatar. If my Jeep ever runs into a ditch, I'll use my Moonlite focuser to pull it out.

Oh cool, didn't know they made that OTA for the SLT mount - it more commonly appears on the Celestron Omni XLT line. Going to test out my 102 on the SLT mount.

Upgrading your diagonal should probably be your first priority, you have a 45 degree diagonal (according to the Celestron website) - pick up a 90 degree star diagonal, your neck will thank you. I believe all the 102MM Celestron long refractors support 2" diagonals, check out your telescope to confirm. Of course, if you only have 1.25" eyepieces, you can just stick with a 1.25" diagonal. I'd recommend a dieletric, they aren't much more expensive (GSO ones are $70 bucks off of Agena), and the compression rings help protect your eyepiece. The 2" runs around $110, but it does come with a 2" - 1.25" adapter.

I've never found the focuser on my 102 objectionable, its not great, but it works. If you find your focuser is sticky, you may have a case of Synta grease. Replace it with some dry lube and the focuser will behave much better.

Thanks for the info. Looking at the GSO 2" and the WO 2". I already have some 2" eyepieces and some heavy 1.25" Luminos eyepieces to use. Already have a dielectric 1.25 for my Celestron 127 Mak-Cass that i have been using on the 102GT, but think the 2" would be better if I continue to get more Luminos eyepieces, especially in the 2" size.

The addition of a Crayford focuser. That quickly followed by replacing straight finder scopes with RACIs used in conjunction with a laser/fixture inserted into the eyepiece holder.

Oops, meant that for a different thread. But, on this thread's topic my 102 wears a GSO two speed which I am very happy with.

jeeojoke/ Diogenes one recommendation I would make for running the longer focal length 102mm on the GT/ SLT mount is to make a pier for it. Very easy to make and inexpensive.
    Refractors: Antares 105 f/15, Celestron 150 f/8, Stellarvue NHNG 80 f/6.9, TAL 100RS f/10, TS 102 f/11, UR 70 f/10, Vixen SD115s f/7.7
    Mounts: Celestron SLT w/ pier mod & EQ-3 tripod, Celestron hypertuned CG-5 w/ tracking motor & Argo Navis, Manfrotto 028B w/ Stellarvue M2C, Manfrotto 055PRO w/ 128RC, TAL-1 HD EQ, Vixen SXP w/ HAL-130 SXG & half pier
Diagonals: 2" Astro-Physics MaxBright, 2" Zeiss/ Baader prism, 2" Baader Herschel Wedge (Photo Version), 2"

The weakest link in the optical chain is the large nut located directly behind the eyepiece/ camera. - Gabrielle

thing in some balance of perspective. Apos are awesome, but long focus Achros aren't that far behind them - Siriusandthepup (CN)

Refractors kick arse precisely because they don't hide behind excuses. That is, they have no obstructions to hide behind. - Jon Isaacs (CN)

The diagonal is average at best, I have the 102 gt,
1st your going to need to make the tripod heavier for proper AP as it blows around in the wind
As I have the xlt as well with 2" bits I keep the 102 as 1.25 with the xlt dielectric diagonal, then when go to camera , just remove the mount and put camera on.
I also moved the control pad to the mount itself so I could see it and use it easier than holding it , check my threads on that
sanity in an insane world is insane
