Post Top 10 Objects to VIew April / May Northern Hemisphere

Is there a suggested view list or resource for April / May night skies of objects that will be rewarding visually using a 12" dob? Something like top 10 objects to view? I'm at Lat 38° 22' Longitude 122° 50' (Northern California)

Here's a couple of lists I generated with SkyTools. They're based on your scope (I guessed 1500mm focal length), the night of May 15th, at your coordinates. Hopefully, there's something in them you might like. I think most of the objects are observable from now, through June. List 1 is all DSO, excluding double stars. List 2 is more of a popular, showpiece list, including the Moon and a couple of planets. They are sorted by RA, ascending. You should invest in a good observation planner - it's worth it to be able to generate lists like these, on demand.

Hey Jerry, I have been using Astro Planner which is really cool but I have been working on a little FileMaker Go / fmp 12 data base for astro targets for my personal viewing too. There is so much to see I have to make a hit list for a week or so so I don't get side tracked. What do you do to keep track of view records?

    Best,

    Richard

The SkyTools program that I used to generate those lists also has a logging function that you can pull up within the main list view. I'll usually put together a list of objects in advance and then log my observations during the session. Everything is stored in it's database. Once you associate a log entry with an object, that entry stays with it. If the object ever comes up in a future list, an icon is with it, indicating there's a log entry.

There's a couple of other good planners out there, Megastar and The Sky come to mind. I prefer SkyTools because it's very inclusive regarding the various star and DSO catalogs. However, all the major planners are fairly proprietary and not part of any open source initiative. So, exporting lists and log history from one to the other isn't possible. You have to decide on one and stick with it.

I still like the idea of Astro Planner, though, because it's more portable. It would be cool for grab-n-go duty - you just carry your planner on your phone! Sometimes, I like to keep it simple
