    Default Orion xt10g vs xt12g

    Hi everyone,
I've been reading many posts and absorbing all sorts of good information....as well as inspiration and motivation.
I've been considering all sorts of scope and have come down to these two I think. I guess I'd like to know more about the mechanics involved. For instance, is the motor and drive system on the xt12g amped up significantly for the added weight over the xt10g. Which scope is likely to remain structurally sound over time. I know that "aperture is king" and believe me...I crave it. But, only if the added weight isn't going to burn out motors, pull anchor/assembly screws, and my back.
And of course, any and all comparisons, contrasts, and general observations will be greatly appreciated.

I don't think the structual soundness is an issue with either of them. I have a 10-12 year old xt8 and barring a nick or scratch here and there it is just as solid as it was new. Orion has some pretty solid scopes. If you can heft the 12" that is one I would recommend.

Well...structural soundness (wood and screws)was indeed part of it, but much of my question is directed at the electric motors and gears. At some point, Orion must beef up these components to meet the added weight and wear of a much heavier go-to Dob.

I have the XT12g, mostly because they are easy to find used, and I did.
The 12 is a mighty beast, I would have preferred the 10 just for lugging it around. The 12 certainly impresses others as the size is quickly noticed but I'm not sure the extra 2" have given me any great advantage. I love my scope but if I could've gotten a great deal on a 10 at the time I wouldn't have thought twice about it. I saved a boat load on my 12 as it was used-lots of used 12s because folks get tired of carting the monster around.

So "Stu", do these people state that tat is in fact the reason they sell them? I am right at that same decision point. "Is the added aperture worth the cost and the labor...not to mention the added space they need in a vehicle?" I can't find any "Gs" i the area used. Of course I've only looked on craigslist. I think that I would buy which ever I managed to find in good condition and at a cheap price. Is there a good place to find used ones?
    Thanks,
    Casey

I think my 10" is a beast, so the 12" is definitely going to be a monster. The only way I would ever go bigger would be with an SCT.

I would get the 10 and spend the extra $ on good eyepieces. Or get the truss 12/14 that's not such a beast

You can find lots of used scopes on this forum and others, I am having a gear issue in the Az but I have 2 heavy 12v batteries living inside the DOB base too.ast night at a star party M1 looked just as good in a XT6 as my monster, I do have a better focuser and I love 2" EPs but other than that and goto the 6 would be ok. If you have any doubt get the 10 and sell it to feed big scope fever later. You can see more of my pimped out ride in the accessory forum under a thread called 12v batteries.
