Default Bought a telescope today. No, bought a mirror today?

Went to a yard sale today. There was an old and somewhat abused Coulter Odyssey 8 sitting there. Not a stellar find by any stretch.

But when I asked the guy how much he wanted for it he told me $20.

Well, I immediately went from massively disinterested to paying $20. The mirror seems to be dirty and certainly in need of cleaning, but I don't see any scratches or other damage.

Pretty much identical to this one but without the interesting eyepieces or the finderscope: Coulter Odyssey 8" Dob ?

Pretty sure the one I have is the F/4.5 and is thus faster than I'd prefer, but I figure that I can get a new tube, focuser, spider, mirror cell, etc. and build a new base for the thing - and have a pretty nice telescope.

Probably cheaper to buy a new Orion, but I want a nice Dob base made either of hardwood or maybe the Birch plywood.

A few interesting things about this telescope?
    1. The focuser was an aluminum tube set into some PVC fittings attached to the telescope tube. Not a great set-up.
    2. The eyepiece is a binocular eyepiece. I think that since it is the binocular eyepiece with the adjustable diopter setting that this was intended to be the way you did your fine focus. Apparently the thing is a 27mm Kellner - I doubt I'll keep it unless I just want it to plug a hole.
    3. The mirror cell is effectively chipboard the same diameter as the mirror with three rubber foam type pads stapled to the top. The mirror sits atop these rubber foam pads and then duct-tape was wrapped around the edge of both the chipboard and the duct-tape was stapled onto the chipboard and then a strap-type clamp was used to secure the duct-tape onto the mirror.

Needless to say, everything but the primary and secondary mirrors are going to rapidly disappear.

And no, I won't be keeping the spider, either. The spider is a single strap of metal that runs across and to which the secondary is then attached.

Now to put together a new package. We'll see how that turns out. I'll eventually work the project on the ATM forum.

A cool project to get into - I have so many that they move at snails pace and have been prohibited from any new projects.
Thirty spokes meet at the nave, because of the hole we may use the wheel.
A cup is moulded from clay, because of the hollow we may use the cup.
Four walls surround a hearth, because of the doors we may use the house.
Thus tools come from what exists, but use from what does not.

This the second time recently that I've heard about a garage sale "find". It teaches me to act cool while browsing a sale. Otherwise I might say "holy smokes - look at that - I want it" and not get away with just $20.
