    Question Canon 70D Bulb ?

I just got a new Canon 70D and went out last night to try and shoot some of the early Perseids. I preset the camera at home because I hate to work in the dark. So I arrived on site, set up the telescope and used the extra mount (on an Ioptron mini-tower) to hold the camera. Went to my camera bag for the manual shutter release I've had for decades, looked at the camera and did a double take... what no cable receiver on the camera to hold the shutter open? OOPS! Well I did manage to take a few pictures manually holding the shutter button and to my wondering eyes, there were more stars on the "film" by a factor of at least 10 than I could see with my eyes.

So the question is - is there a way to have the bulb set so that the shutter remains open for long periods of time without me having to manually hold the shutter button? I suppose a piece of tape or a small clamp could hold the shutter button down, but I'm kind of hoping there might be a more elegant solution... like it's hidden in the software as a setting - which having read the manual (only once through so far) I haven't found. A quick check online searching hasn't revealed an answer.

I must say I am really impressed with my first photo shoot and I'm looking forward to doing some great shots next week at Stellafane.

Only a few of the Newest High-End Canons and Nikons have an Intervalometer Feature built into their Firmware, and "By Tradition" the rest have only Manual Shutter Timers good up to 30 seconds.
Actually, the brand new Nikon D810A Astronomy DSLR is the 1st to have built-in Manual Shutter Time settings for 180 / 300 / 600 / 900 seconds.

For certain Canon's, there is MagicLantern Firmware, but even that limits one to 30 seconds.

You'll need to go with an External Intervalometer or a USB Tether to a Laptop running software such as BackyardEOS.
You should do yourself the favor of checking out this Software (or the equivalents from Nebulosity, APT, SGP, etc), because of the MANY other AP Imaging related Features that it provides (Focusing Help, Expanded LiveView, Capture Plans, Planetary Video Imaging, etc).

Yeah - I got a 70D when my 50D shutter went out (so I could still do some AP while the 50D was being repaired). And, even though I use APT, I did want to take some darks inside. When I looked for the external hookup I was also surprised it was gone! I also noticed that the zoom feature on APT wouldn't work with the 70D.

Both DSLRs have External Shutter Trigger Ports - just of different designs.

The 50D has the "older" N3-style that is used with the Canon Full-Frame DSLRs.
The 70D has the "newer" E3-style that uses the a mini-phono plug.

Or are you talking about something else??

Yes, I saw the MagicLatern, but it is not ready for the 70D yet. I will check out the BackyardEOS! Thanks for the tip.
