Default Canon 600D Shuts Down (Turns Itself Off) Without Notice

    Hi all,

I remember a while back when there were several discussions about the Canon EOS "T" series (T1i, T2i, T3i, T4i) shutting down for no apparent reason. Does anyone else remember these exchanges and what the fix was? My memory says you needed to send it in for service but there was a common cause for this situation.

Hopefully someone has a better memory than me.

    Clear skies,

Battery is fully charged. I'm investigating if it is just the LiveView that shuts down, or the whole camera just turns itself off. I will try a different fully charged battery to see what happens.

A quick google says 'auto power off setting' or 'auto shutdown when using liveview due to overheating'; other alternatives range from 'the battery is old, and heats up during discharging', and 'shooting video on a hot day'. Are you using the standard firmware, or are you using Magic Lantern?

when it switches off, and you switch it back on - is the battery still at the level you expect, or is the battery near or fully empty?

Some almost-hits have to do with frozen 600d's where they have to remove both the main battery as well as the small clock battery to get it back alive.

Are you using a proper Canon battery, or an after-market one?

Thank you for all the tips. I will investigate them tonight when I speak to the seller about this camera.

Well I experienced the same frustration last night, when I was testing out my new iOptron SkyGuider. Finally got it polar aligned, waited until the full moon was above the house roof and in line with the mount, then tried to get the moon focused in live view. Every 30 seconds it would power off. Found out the culprit is the Auto Power Off time (page 167 in the manual). Just go to the menu, first wrench or tool drop down and change it to Off.

I will try again tonight and see how it goes.

The auto power off will get you every time. Be aware though as was stated before, leaving the camera on in Liveview will heat up the camera rather quickly and cause it to shut down as well. My T3i does that especially as the ambient temperatures are warming up with spring and summer arriving.
