    Default NEX-5N full spectrum

ok so i bought nex-5n astro modded from spencers. its taking some getting used too. the sensitivity of the sensor is not quite what I'm used too compaired with the non modded nex-5n . the 1sec picture is close to what i see on live view. a 30sec picture is pretty much completely over exposed. light pollution is a greater problem but thats to be expected. color balance is off abit. looks like ill be needing a few filters for when the moons around.

    comments/suggestions?

    pics are 1sec 5sec 10sec 15sec

You need an Astronomik CLS-CCD filter or something very similar from Hutech, Astrodon, Baader etc.
Colour balance can be tweaked endlessly in post-processing... You are shooting in RAW arent you?

I have light pollution issues at my observatory, and I've been getting pleasing results (see attached image) from an Astronomik CLS filter, as suggested.

For your situation a LP filter in the imaging train is probably going to be a must. However, in the meantime, instead of imaging at ISO1600, with the increased sensitivity of the modded camera, you might want to try ISOs 400 and 800 for the longer exposures?

M42 is the brightest target you can image, so it's really not an accurate indication of the camera's potential. Just a thought.

i think your on to something about lowering the iso. heres a stack of 20sec at 800iso (stacked only no processing other than balance and black pt). the images from the camera could actually be balanced on jpg images manually but not the raw. the raw is manageable in gimp but theres just something strange about the green channel of the histogram. ill try 400iso next.

In all of this you have to cling on to the fact that RAW is basically what the camera sensor saw and JPG is an interpretation/approximation of that... A significant amount of data is lost (in AP terms) in most jpeg formats.
So really the only thing jpeg is useful for is to take preview images for framing and focus checking... You CANNOT accurately judge exposure by the jpg appearance or histogram.
In-camera jpg processing is designed for instant printing and in-camera viewing of images... It really isn't useful for AP.

If you have an option to shoot only RAW you should use that as the camera will do slightly less internal processing which helps with thermal issues... Especially if you are storing images to an internal memory card.

i understand what your saying Phil, the problem i was having was the histograms color balance were so messed up on the green channel in both formats. the red and blue where almost half way across and the green was barely separating from the left side. i finally figured out a way untill i can get pixinsight.

done in RAW with some sharpening a bit,

A CLS-CCD filter would help to restore the histogram balance somewhat on a full spectrum camera.
