    Default More Minimalist Photography

DISCLAIMER: I know these photos are terrible. Most of you know that I am more of a visual astronomer. That's just the point. Last night I wanted to take a snapshot of Garradd so I could prove that I saw it for a project I am working on.

I didn't use a telescope. I didn't use any expensive lenses. I used my Canon Rebel DSLR on a $150 tripod. I used the lenses that came with the camera last Christmas. I didn't use RegiStax. I don't even know how. I'm not a good photographer and only know the bare basics about processing. Frankly, those of you who are amazingly skilled at astrophotography sort of intimidate me. I am amazed at the excellent shots that are regularly posted on here. I set my camera and tripod up in my driveway, which is near a light pole. I did put a tarp up to hide the light. I ended up with the following pictures.

The point? It may cost an arm and a leg to really get into astrophotography, but it doesn't take a lot of money or expertise to have fun as long as you don't set your aspirations too high. This may encourage others to experiment.

The future? I don't know? Maybe I'll try to figure out how to use the RegiStax that everyone is talking about. You have to crawl before you can walk. I did have a lot of fun, and that's what it is about for me.

I don't know JG, I keep trying, but they keep coming and going. I might need some help on this one. I'll see if I can find someone who can figure it out.

    Rob,

    you have succeeded!

Try a better lens, something like 1.4/35, it'l show more.

Years before, I have taken pics with Canon FD 1.2/55mm Aspherical SSC, 25sec exposure on Kodak E200 slide film, copied them with a slide copy gear on Fuji negative 100ASA, got them devloped and printed, scanned them, and finally stacked them.

Or, on the comets, I have preferred the Fuji negative 800ASA, because of its sensitivity to the Methan (or whatever else) comet emission. Otherwise, again, got it developed and printed, and so on.

Looking forward to your next trials

Nice pics! (The ones I could see, anyway. The forum seems to be having problems with attachments again today.) Yes, having fun is what it is all about!
