Default Re: Building an EQ Wedge for the Celestron SLT/GT Goto Mount To Capture Nightscape Im

I've done some experimenting using a simple homemade wedge on my NexStar SLT mount. Unfortunately ... at least with my mount ... any OTA that weighs around 3-4 pounds and over will cause the polar axis clutch to slip since the weight of the scope is greatly offset from the polar axis. This clutch can be easily tightened to hold greater weight, however it's not going to relieve the strain on the polar motor or gears and it will only add to the strain. A second possible solution is to add a counterweight opposite to the OTA, but that's only going to add additional weight to the system which will again limit the weight of an OTA.

So ... from my experience ... if you want to build a wedge for your NexStar GT/SLT mount with the intent to use it with an OTA that weighs more tha 3-4 pounds, you'll likely run into some problems. However, if you want to build a equatorial imaging platform for a DSLR camera and lens, then this should be a very doable project ... as eloquently demonstrated by the successful wedge build and posted images by "jaetea".

The only thing done was a power off/on cycle. This is true for ALL my Celestron Alt-Az mounts. Hmmm....

    JT,

I also experience the same thing with my 4SE mount and wonder which one has the least error.
