Default Sue French retiring from writing

Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere on the site, but didn't find any reference to it doing a quick search.

I saw on another site that in the Dec 2018 edition of Sky and Telescope they announced that Sue would be retiring. I don't have the issue with me, so not sure if it specified when this would occur. Presumably they will come up with someone to take over the Deep Sky Wonders column. Finding someone with the same skill levels in observing and writing will be challenging. Time will tell if the column continues or finally goes the way of the dodo.

I knew she utilized the program Megastar on a laptop in the field, but found it very interesting that it is so heavily red filtered with overlays that one person commented that he had difficulty telling that it was on at all, let alone be able to read it. Her husband Alan also commented to that, saying she has to remove most of the filter overlays before he can read it. With such exceptional night vision its no wonder she picks up the detail she does.

Reading her column is something I did each month and I own both her books. While I don't really use them as sourcing for my own projects, I do enjoy reading her notes on objects as a comparative source for my own observations. Sorry to see her hang it up, but I certainly do understand the desire to retire and have more free time away from deadlines.

She will be missed! I have two of her publications: "Deep Sky Wonders" and "Celestial Sampler". Great reference material.

I read Sky & Telescope occasionally but I don't have a subscription. She certainly was a talented observer and her ruminations will be missed. I don't plan on "retiring" from astronomy anytime soon as it is a hobby that can be pursued until one's last breath (or at least until one can longer lift an OTA/mount)! Anyway, I hope she enjoys her retirement and keeps looking upward.

I am sure she will. She and Alan will have more time to dedicate to the hobby without having to worry about her monthly deadlines. Since Alan has been retired for a few years, it should make their life simpler.

There was a copy of DSW at Halfprice Books awhile ago. I regret I didn't grab it.

I've owned and used both her books to prepare lists of targets in the past. Celestial Sampler was used extensively during my first two years back in the hobby, Deep Sky Wonders a little later.
