Default Addicted to Astronomy Books & Magazines ... does anyone else suffer, too?

I have an addiction ... to astronomy books & magazines. Is this a bad thing?

It started because I could never find the book I wanted (or needed) at the library. So I started my own library.

I own EVERY Astronomy Magazine ever published - 1973 August to present. I have all of them in the Astronomy Magazine binders (Sky & Telescope has been around too long to collect all of those so I sold-off what I had).

I have all 26-issues of Star & Sky Magazine (published 1979 January thru 1981 February).

I bought a small binding machine and I copied and spiral-bound all of my equipment manuals (two copies of each: original for indoor use & spiral-bound for field use).

I bought a laminator so I could laminate star charts & make laminated covers for all of my spiral-bound equipment manuals (to protect things from the high-dew area in which I live). I have laminated self-made "job aids" ... color filter lists (and how each enhances & on what), sunspot characterization & categories, a 15-page laminated Excel spreadsheet listing all of my eyepieces and their specs on my three telescopes ("naked", with a Binoviewer, with a Binoviewer & my Denkmeier Power X Switch/Diagonal), and many more ...

My most recent project was purchasing the Astronomy Magazine "Atlas of the Stars", going to FedEx office to have the binding chopped off, then putting the entire 100-pages into document protectors & placing them in a 3-ring binder. NOT that I really needed another star atlas (see list below).

And of course books ... not counting the magazines & manuals ... and not counting the Intersellum DVD series ... I have approximately 285. I had to create a spreadsheet because I bought some duplicates by mistake (now I have an entire wall unit where I have them organized by topic). In my defense, since my wall unit is full I've only bought 2-3 books over the past 6-months or so (and I've actually sold a couple). That's good, right?

So back to my initial question: is this bad? Should I have an intervention with myself and cut back to "100"? Exactly what do I own? I think this is an accurate list, sorted by topic (not alphabetical) and listing everything that has an ISBN (and some old books published before ISBNs - yes, I've managed to collect a dozen or so antiques along the way plus some autographed copies considered collectible):

    Good lord, man.

I thought I was addicted with my NOS copy of "All about Telescopes" by Sam Brown, and "Nightwatch" by Terence Dickinson.

I don't see Sam Brown's "All about Telescopes" in that list. Throw the rest out and get it.

Oy vey! That is not an addiction, that is full blown obsession! I thought I had an addiction to printed atlases due to my collection, but I now realize I merely have a slight habit in comparison to you! You've got a lot of great titles there, so I bow to the master!

Dr. Trombatissimo pronounces you to be healthy collector who does not need an intervention. This is useful information and a good collection of books keeps you off the interwebby when the Cloud Gods take over the skies. The interventions need to be judiciously distributed to those who send out invitations to their "I just bought my 100th eyepiece" party or those who have more than the reasonable and necessary basic collection of seven Dobs. (A REALLY BIG home observatory Dob, An as big as I can truck to dark skies Dob, A reasonable sized general purpose Dob, A super cool high tech ultra light folding travel Dob, and no more than three older but still good for outreach Dobs that have sentimental value or have different colored tubes which is why I need to keep all three of them.)

    Hello CWO4,

    not bad at all, really.

I have just a few astronomy books, but here are some of them, maybe missing on your list:
Steven R. Coe: Deep Sky Observing - The Astronomical Tourist, with Steve's magnificient sketches
Philip S. Harrington: Touring the Universe through Binoculars
Roger Blake: Deep Space Image Catalog, including all objects list cross-correlated, plus Blake's objects
Don Machholz: The Observing Guide to the Messier Marathon
    Ronald Stoyan: Atlas der Messier-Objekte

With so many books, do you find time at the eyepiece?

Well, you have everything that I have, and far, far, far more! You are the greatest!

Wait a minute... I have the entire set of CCD Astronomy, from the Premier Edition, dated Spring 1994, to the final edition, dated Winter 1997, published by Sky Publishing. Maybe I actually have something that you don't?

You are still the greatest. I've not seen a more extensive personal library.
