Default DSLR onto a Skyliner 200P

    Hey guys, been a while,

I recently buoght a Canon DSLR camera, and i'm looking for a way to attach it to my Skyliner 200P dobsonian, in the product description of the scope it states 'Direct SLR Camera Connection', yet I have unscrewed many bits + pieces round the EP yet none seem to attach to my 58mm lense,

As the scope doesnt have GoTo or any tracking motor, I won't be taking images of DSO's just yet, however i'd love to take some nice photos of the moon/larger planets.

    any idea's?

    thanks
    Chris

Chris , the camera lens , attached to camera will not attach the the EP of the scope. What you need is a T mount adapter . This fits on the body of the camera ( click rotate similar to the lens ) once the T mount is fitted you can then add ( more money , sorry ! ) a extension tube . Its the tube that goes ''into'' the focuser, after unscrewing the top part of it.

here's some links to show what I mean

    T mount for Canon

    T mount

    Extension Tube

    Tube extension

This one is a combined T mount and extension

    No t mount adapter

Thank you very much indeed pete, i'll probably go for the combination of the 2 for 25 pounds.

What kind of results should I expect? and also what would the magnification be if there are no lenses in it?

Also - is navigating the sky (maybe searching for andromeda for example) difficult using the screen/viewfinder?

Sounds like you are using a Dob... in which case, you don't have tracking or guiding capability to support long-exposure durations.

Using a DSLR on a Dob, you can get excellent lunar shots, and on occasion good shots of Jupiter and its moons, as well as moderate-field star shots.

It would be unlikely that you could support long enough exposure duration to image M31/Andromeda.

On a telescope in prime-focus/direct objective mode imaging, the magnification is computed as approximately 1X for every 50mm of focal length. For a 1000mm focal length instrument, for example you'd get approximately 20X magnification.

In this case, the telescope is emulating a telephoto prime lens, like a 1000mm telephoto.

Chris, the results depend on what you are viewing, equipment used , how it is used and how you process the data. Effectively you would be using a technique called Prime Astrophotograhy.

With good collimation , what you see in the secondry would be what you are imaging. I used a 200P SW Reflector, the Moon near enough filled the secondry mirror.

Dont worry about what mag at the focuser, thats not the issue , you can and will have to alter the size in post processing.

As for using the camera to hunt , forget it , its too small a FOV, best aquire target via , say wide FOV EP for M31 ( example ) then swop out for the camera, refocus ( the hard bit ! ) on stars in the viewfinder/liewview screen.

That being said , in some reflector scopes , of which your Dob is based on as far as OTA is concerned, inward focus can some times be problematic. Somepeople got round that by moving the Primary mirror further up the scope tube. Have a browse through some of the threads in the Astrophotography forums , theres a wealth of info there.

Welcome to the frustrating world of Astrophotography !
