I need to obtain a precise definition of a Flat Field Correction. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Before anyone here provides a precise definition, would this happen to be homework or exam related?

If you came here for help with your homework...

This term has at least two contextual definitions with respect to astronomy / telescope optics. The correct definitions are both astrophotography related, so perhaps you can provide additional insight into whether your question is oriented toward optics or imaging.

We are astronomy students in our final two years of our degree and we are doing some imaging of the sun to study solar limb darkening and we have to learn to eradicate the noise.

It's flattering that you find us smart enough to be entrusted with your question.. and at the same time a tad offensive that you thought we were dumb enough not to notice that you replied to your own post.

That being the case, a couple of suggestions:

    - start by providing an introductory post, which provides us a less opaque profile of who you are, and what your interests are. In this current thread, please consider at least a capsule description of your own understanding of flat field correction as it relates to noise reduction. The membership, many of whom are quite experienced in the subject would then be happy to discuss this in a helpful, collegial fashion to provide insight.

    - or, consider Google your best friend and seek independence

I appreciate that you may be pressed for time, however there is an approach to requesting help that is less offensive, and more inviting than your starting point.

Ah, today's youth... why actually put thought and effort into your studies when "the Internet" can do your homework/research for free...

Perhaps an unfair generalization, but one of my pet peeves. Along with having to walk to/from school, uphill both ways, in the snow and barefoot back in the day, I see intrinsic value in the learning process. The last of the dinosaurs...

Where would I be today if only I'd had "the Internet" to do my homework?

Duncan , I think the main thrust here is that the two of you just jumped in and expected an answer , straight off, whilst I do appreciate ( now that you have told us ! ) the Uni course , there is a certain Netiquette that most follow. Had you gave that some thought , then the replies here ( and at other sites ) would have been very different.

Gotta say it lads , if you're part of the problem , then you're part of the solution .

No hard feelings and good luck with the Uni course.
