    Default Illuminated Reticle Eyepieces query

    Greetings all,

I have been chasing up some prices on Illuminated eye pieces as I embark on drift aligning and the prices vary all over the place.

All seem to be 12mm 1.25" with the exception of the Meade

    Andrews as a Skywatcher 12mm for $69
Astro optical Supplier has their one Bauer 12mm illuminated reticle eyepiece is $189.95
Bintel has Meade (9mm and 12mm Plossl) and Orion (12mm only)from $139 and $129 respectively.

I know how much eyepieces vary in cost but for drift aligning do you need to spend so much? I would have thought the Andrews Skywatcher $69 would be ok?

    Thoughts?
    (I have an ED80 on a Heq5 pro)

    Many thanks

    Damian

    Hi Damo

Well as far as I figure, to drift align you only need to keep a star centred in the double cross hairs. You don't need premium optics to do that. Also I suspect that the Orion 12.5 and the SW 12.5 are the same EP

Guess I'd go for the SW at $69

Hi damo , from what i have read on the meade , they are just modified achromats . They are not anything special other than they are iluminated . In fact they are the low budget eyepieces that come with there inexpensive scopes . I know this because i have a couple MAs from whene i bought my ETXs and a 114eq reflector . Just my 2 cents .

... just ran across these ... they are Meade 4000 Plossl 9mm illuminated, but with a corded power supply (not hearing aid batteries) ... so you might have to deal with a power supply ...

More than likely , the meade and sky watcher come out of the same factory . They are priced about the same .
