    Default Dumb Ol' Spam Bots

The list of new members goes back one month. In better times, it spanned about 15 to 20 pages of new sign-ups, 10 per page.

At this moment in time, it is at 1,960 pages. All new sign-ups over the past month. 99.99995% spam bots. That's almost 20,000 spam bots in a month. They are still signing up to the tune of about 50 per hour.

If there are any remaining human members out there that do not know where to turn, here is your answer: https://www.theskysearchers.com/index.php

This forum is toast. And I only needed 595 more "likes" to reach 70,000. Dang it.

In theory, the Admin could configure suitable spam protection. We used to have it until an "upgrade" wiped it out. In practice, we no longer have an Admin. And he was the only person with the keys. So no one can fix it now.

We have tried banning the spambots as they arrive. In one bot war, earlier this year, the vigilance of the moderator team killed something like 30,000 bot sign-ups over two months, one at a time. Each kill required a couple of minutes of a moderator's time. You can't keep up that pace for any length of time. We burned out.

So now, the bots get in. The only defence was to start a new forum, with proper security and multiple admins so that we are not dependent on a single person for critical functions. You can find it at: The Sky Searchers.

What are the Spam Bots trying to accomplish, other than flood the forum with garbage messages?
Doesn't the forum track what IP addresses these bots originate from?
You should be able to report them to their ISP.

The IP addresses used by the spam bots are already blacklisted. If the appropriate protection was in place, they could not even sign up (we have this in place at TSS).

By far the bulk of these are outside of North America. Some countries don't seem to give a rip of they are hosting spammer hives or not. We can bleat and complain until we are blue in the face. If one gets shut down, two more take its place. And then you have VQNs and such making things tougher to trace back to the source.

This is all a 10-minute fix to cure, we just need an admin to do it.
