Default Using SGPro for the Moon

    Hi all,

I've been messing around with Sequence Generator Pro and creating a list of sequences of targets I wish to photograph. One of them is, of course, the Earth's moon. But from the Object selection in the Framing and Mosaic Wizard, I can't seem to find it.

How does one create a sequence for the Earth's moon? Blanket Google searches on the subject have not been fruitful.

Additionally, can any one offer advice on what are the best filters and exposure lengths for lunar astrophotography?

    My equipment is as follows:

    Celestron EdgeHD 925
    CGX mount
    ZWO ASI 290mm Auto Guider/camera
    ZWO ASI 1600mm Pro camera
ZWO 8-position filter wheel (w Hα, OIII, SII, Lum, RGB)
    OAG
    Sequence Generator Pro
    PHD2

After this weeks discoveries enabling me to finally build a functioning sequence, I am excited for clear skies this weekend!

    Many thanks for your time.

Default Re: Using SGPro for the Moon

I image the Moon from time to time, though I do not use a filter.

SGP might be a bit of overkill for this particular target. It does not require much exposure at all, and this can vary depending on the lunar phase during capture.

I’ve imaged the Moon with my ASI120MM, ASI174MC, and ASI294MC Pro. Cam selection is dependent upon scope focal length.

When I do lunar captures, I typically will run out a few 1000-frame SER video files captured with SharpCap (free). After that, I will process each video file with Autostakkert! to quality sort the frames. I then stack the best 10% of frames for each video.

Following that bit, I then open each stacked image in Registax and run a little wavelet sharpening. A bit of a crop with Photoshop to trim the rinds off, and I’m usually good. The degree to which you apply wavelets can depend on the quality of the glass that captured the image. With one of my achromats, I have to get more aggressive with it. With my APO, I merely glance in the general direction of the wavelet sliders.

As for filters, my buddy Russell made a very nice lunar capture here with an orange filter: Color Moon from the 17th

    Below is one of mine:

Your SCT should make some very nice lunar images. Try the video method. Pretty easy and kinda fun.
