Default I broke my finder scope....

So I picked up a used Orion RACI finder scope a month or so ago from CN and never had a chance to try it out (nothing but clouds).

Yesterday, not only was it clear but I just received my new Moonlight focuser so I was anxious to get out there!

While performing my alignment I noticed I couldn't see much through my finder scope. Then I noticed it was because it was terribly out of focus.

I didn't think the focus was adjustable so I figured something might be loose. I was quite surprised to learn how little force is required to break the 90* prism........

I didn't realize it was a cheap plastic threaded prism.

Do they sell replacements? I haven't had any luck so far.

    Thanks!

Sorry for your troubles. To focus the normal stock 8x50 RACI finders, you loosen the knurled collar behind the objective then rotate the objective cell to achieve best focus, then re-tighten the collar (see link below for an illustration).

As for replacement prisms, those are not really sold in the new or used market. They usually just unscrew from the tube of the finder. That is so one can insert it into a bracket, then screw the eyepiece/prism end back into the tube. I don't believe I've ever seen the eyepiece end by itself on the used market either, only whole finders. You might call Orion just to see if they have one that comes from a broken finder that perhaps they could sell you. Since I am not certain where or how specifically you broke it, is there any way to either glue or use duct tape? Only thing I could think of other than buying another.

Thanks for the illustration. That helps.

I may be able to repair it. I'm going to give it a try at least.

I should have taken my time but it was the first clear night in a month........

I had a look online. couldn't find anything, can you post some pics of the damage and maybe some dimensions,
sounds like it's made from plastic, might be able to glue it, a 3d printer is handy from little fixes like these .

    the scope is a 50mm x9 ?

you might be able to bolt or glue the prism to the flange that screws in or over the back end of the finder tube.

you could drill some holes in each corner on the prism and drill some holes on the flange/adaptor to the finder and tap and screw it on or just use small bolts.

Unless you actually broke the prism then it should be an easy fix with all the glues available now , superglue should be ok

    Thanks!

I think some super glue will do the trick for the repair but as far as focus I'm not sure.

The picture in the link above doesn't represent my scope. I don't have a locking ring. The objective end screws off and the lens is held up against a stop by an internal lock ring.

I took it apart and there doesn't seem to be any way to adjust the focus. I can loosen the objective and possibly achieve focus but there is no way to jock it down.

    And yes. It is 9 X 50.

    Thanks again!

The Orion/Synta Amici diagonals used on their finders are stock Synta (Sky-Watcher, Orion, Celestron) Amici diagonals.

I'd post more pictures but the site is broken and this is the only picture I have. The GSO Amici above has a WO helical focuser/drawtube and a new nosepiece. The original Amici prism part was a Synta prism. The only difference between the Synta regular 1.25" diagonals and the diagonals used in Synta made finder scopes is that there are different drawtubes and nosepieces. All the parts are there on the original finder diagonal, and are interchangeable with a regular Amici diagonal, including the extra reducing collars. If you purchase a Sky-Watcher, Orion or Celestron 1.25" Amici diagonal you should be able to use it on the finder scope. I once turned the diagonal from a finder scope with a broken bracket into a regular diagonal (above). I'm pretty sure GSO 1.25" Amici diagonals are compatible. In my experience the GSO Amici prisms are slightly better quality than the Synta. The above picture actually has a GSO body now (you can tell by the darker colour screws holding the base on) but the prism and housing was originally from the broken Sky-Watcher finder scope. They're all interchangeable.

That is interesting. I wonder how old it is? All the ones I've dealt with in my recollection always had the collar which loosens to facilitate focusing at the objective end. Those are the standard RACI finders for the mass produced scopes, which typically come from Synta or GSO. I will say that many years ago I did have an Orion XT8 bought in the 1990s (sold it quite some time ago), but I cannot recall the design of the RACI that came with it. Hmmmm

going down the expensive route but teleskop have a finder to t2 adaptor in case you want to use another diagonal ,one that's t2 or (42mm thread)
